From the manufacturer
With a built in Conical Burr Grinder and Dose Control
Sage by Heston Blumenthal are constantly searching for ways to prepare and cook meals so they are both healthy and delicious.
Food will taste better with the right texture, cook with the most accurate temperature, and prepare in conditions specific to each ingredient.
Create great tasting espresso – from bean to espresso– in less than a minute. The Barista Express allows you to grind the beans right before extraction, and its interchangeable filters and a choice of automatic or manual operation ensure authentic café style results in no time at all.
Dose Control is key to a perfect espresso, too much coffee and you will have too much pressure and a bitter taste, not enough coffee and you will have not enough pressure and a sour taste.
With the in built Grinder and the Sage Razor tool, you can have a consistent grind and dose to ensure perfect flavour.
Digital temperature control (PID) delivers water at precisely the right temperature, ensuring optimal espresso extraction.
The precise Dosing an the Razor tool allow you to easily get the 9 Bars of Pressure throughout extraction, which is key to a smooth mellow Espresso.
The steam wand performs at the level that allows you to hand-texture the micro-foam necessary to enhance the flavour of the coffee and create latte art.
With perfectly textured milk filled with micro foam which wraps its self around the espresso to give you a beautiful creamy taste with every mouthful. Using the 15 bars of pressure you can create this milk with ease, with the Barista Express.
Perfectly extracted Espresso with a rich creamy crema on top, packed full of flavour. With PID temperature control and an Over Pressure Valve, as well as a precise and perfect dose each time, you can achieve the perfect Espresso.
Thermocoil Heating System
Our Barista Express and Duo Temp Pro Coffee Machines use a thermocoil heating system is essentially a cast aluminium block, around a stainless steel tube.
This gives you a quick heat up time and also a really clean taste.
The other method which is called Thermoblock, uses a cast aluminium block with a non stick coated path for the water.
This as you can imagine can taint the water with a horrible taste of non stick, which no one wants in their Coffee!
The Warm Honey Pour
When you combine the 3 key elements to make the perfect espresso, watch as the coffee pours out the group head like warm honey!

bought this and OMG what a difference.
Bit fiddly to setup and get settings right (and you'll have a sleepless night from all that coffee tasting), but worth the effort and once you get the hang of balancing grind and quantity to get the pressure right for extraction then you're good to go....
But ensure you use fresh roasted beans - NOT the supermarket ones, as you have no idea when they were roasted and there is a big difference in the final result. I tried for ages to extraction right - changed beans to fresh ones and instantly made a difference.
Its an experience - so don't expect to grab a quick coffee
and another thing make sure you have a mat or cloth down when grinding as coffee grinds tend to get everywhere.
I knocked a star off, why? the black version has issues, the paintwork chips and flakes very easily (revealing the substructure), I wipe it regularly, but I think after one or two bumps/ knocks, cups, the basket, the milk jug etc, it is starting to look tired after 30 days of use (this is the front drawer tray), from a buyer point of view I should have gone for the stainless version(deeply regretting my purchase , thought it would look the part on the black marble worktop). I expect there to be a few knocks here and there but maybe not so soon and definitely not so easily.
If it get worse may have to return
Shame really, but hey, still getting those smashing flavours :)
This is a weighty and solid feeling product. Pleasing use of stainless throughout. The controls and other movement of components feel positive and secure. Once out of the box, you are prompted to engage with systems cleaning regime, which is recommended, despite the temptation to create your first coffee. Its worth undertaking because if you are serious about keeping this machine clean and operational, this is how it's going to be!
The system comes with a milk jug which is a little misleading, as the frequently bought together offer included a milk jug and knock box as a package. I have yet to raise this with Amazon, but beware if tempted to buy all three - there is no need.
When all the extras are unpacked, they can be stored in a handy storage area at the rear of the drip collection tray - obviously sealed off from the collection area.
Despite being a 15 bar pump, it's not as noisy as some brands. It maybe an obvious point to some; the pressure dial is observed during delivery of the crema,I initially thought it would give me a read out of when the working pressure is reached prior to using it. Not so!
I like the freedom Sage has given its users to experiment and really tailor their coffee the way they want it. The finished quality is proportionate with the skill and effort you put in.
Sage push the importance of the optimal pressure and refer to the needle pointing to the 11-12 clock position on the pressure dial as an indication of achieving it. You may find it will take numerous attempts to find this sweet spot and perfect crema, don't be put off by this, it will happen. when you do, it's worth using the programme button to save the configuration.
I like the grind delivery method which provides a measured and custom grind amount directly into the portafilter.
The coffee grind is superbly consistent. Be careful however, it's easy to increase the grind amount and overfill the portafilter causing coffee grind to spill over and into the tray and waste.
You don't have to look far in youtube for high quality guidance and information regarding their machines.
There are some cleaning accessories included, but i would recommend buying spares as the replacement volumes will be greater and at least they will be on site the day you need them.
The contoured grinder dial on the left handside is moulded plastic and not solid. The movement also feels loose when rotating through the grind size options. In my view, it lacks that important positive function, instead I'm left wondering if this fragile feature will break. I think it cheapens the system, Sage, if you read this, consider adding polished aluminium dials and buttons. I'm sure customers would'nt mind paying the difference to turn this into a Gucci product.
The hot water spout is placed between the steam stem and portafilter housing and not easy to get a cup under it, plus there is an initial spray of very hot water before it settles into a smooth flow - Beware!
At first I was unsure would the extra work to make a coffee get old quick, but it hasn't. I love entertaining with this machine, and my morning coffee routine feels much more fun and rewarding.
For those of you who are worried about getting the perfect tamp pressure, and pulling the perfect espresso, don't be. I watched loads of videos before the machine arrived, but it's really simple to get it right. Took maybe 3 or 4 coffees before I got the grind, dose, and tamp pressure perfect. Also, the double-wall filters are there if you have some pre-ground coffee to test with. (I use that for my decaf evening coffee)
I haven't been able to experiment with some of my local roasters coffee beans, but that's next on the list. Apparently coffee is much better when enjoyed 10-30 days from roasting - so find some local roasters!
