the Smart Grinder Pro
The very best taste always comes from using quality, freshly roasted coffee that’s ground right before you brew. Coffee is at its peak flavour potential between 5-20 days after roasting, so always buy beans with a ‘Roasted On’ date printed on the bag. Buying beans with a ‘Use By’ or ‘Best Before’ date makes it impossible to know when these were roasted. Always use a quality burr grinder, and grind right before you brew, just like the very best cafes.
Sages's conical burr Smart Grinder Pro uses Dosing IQ technology to automatically adjust the dose whenever you change the grind. Choose from 60 different grind settings to achieve maximum flavour potential to suit your favourite brew. Choose between 'cups' for French press or Filter, and 'shots' for Espresso to get the right dose for your coffee's needs. You can even tweak for taste. Comes with two grinding cradles for dosing directly into espresso porta filters plus an air-tight storage container.

I looked at burr grinders only as it appears to be widely accepted that crushing the beans is preferable to chopping with a blade grinder, you get a more consistent size, can grind finer for espresso and the extraction is often better on brew.
I read about the Baratz Encore, DeLonghi KG79, Dualit Bur and a few others. I appreciate there are price differences here.
I went for the Sage Pro for a few reasons, I think looks the best, it has more grind settings, a portafilter cradle that automatically dispenses when pushed, an LCD screen and the reviews around the internet are glowing.
It takes some adjustment on the grind and dose, but when you get it right it's incredible. The grind is consistent and produces an excellent result. I use the grinder alongside the Sage Duo Temp espresso machine and this grinder produces a fine enough dose.
The only con is that it's a little louder than expected.
All in all I have only positive things to say about it thus far. Long term review might tell a different story but it's hard to imagine that happening at this stage.
We have been steadily developing a coffee habit and decided to get an espresso machine, deciding on a Gaggia Classic and managing to snap up 2nd-hand one for a bargain.
Needing a grinder, we then bought the "De'Longhi KG79 Professional Burr Grinder" (Which came highly recommended here on Amazon). It turned out to be absolute crap, and no matter how fine the grind was set, the coffee would always come out incredibly coarse. We bought this as a replacement.
To say it's a step up would be a MASSIVE understatement. This thing is a beauty by comparison. The array of grind options (60!) is staggering, and even at setting 21/60 (towards the coarse end of what the guide recommends for espresso coffee) the coffee is ground 10 times finer than the DeLonghi on its finest setting. On top of that, it's infinitely more consistent. You can also select the number of shots of coffee you would like, and tailor the grind time so you get exactly the right amount and, once you've dialed it in, get the perfect cup every time.
Intuitive and simple to use
Very well designed (especially with cleaning in mind)
If you're looking at grinders (like the DeLonghi) and wondering if it's worth spending the extra money... It 100% is.
And this is it. Simple to use, simple to reset, simple to experiment with, simple to clean, and excellent grinding. Worth the price, in my view.
