The Smart Toast (Long Slot) controls include Fruit Bread, Lift & Look and A Bit More and includes extra-long slots designed for large artisan bread.

Fruit Bread automatically adjusts the time for fruit bread; Lift & Look activates the motorised carriage to gently raise the bread just long enough to check if it's done. Press A Bit More and the carriage lowers once more to give it just that. The Smart Toast includes LED toasting progress indicator and a removable crumb tray.

Heston's Tip

To make it a little easier, Sage toasters are equipped with a 'A Quick Look' button that raises the bread while toasting (so you can get nice and close without singeing your eyebrows), as well as a 'A Bit More' button for adding a bit extra at the end if desired.

Brilliant - long slot toaster ideal for artisan shaped breads and bagets, but also perfect for a square shaped loaf too. Love the automatic lift and drop, the quick check butting that doesn't interrupt the setting, and the 'a little bit more' which toasts for another 30 seconds (different type of breads toast at different speeds), an all round brilliant toaster, very well thought out in a very smart design, plus being narrow, it doesn't take up as much workspace as my old manual four slice toaster which was enormous and ugly by comparison. I can throughly recommend - plus it toast evenly no matter where you place your bread.

After our old toaster (over 10 years old, bless) decided to play up, my husband and I decided to buy a new toaster. But, oh wow, if you go through the reviews of the gazillion toasters out there, it seems that none of them are able to toast bread properly. However, if read carefully, you'll see that the reviews are mostly down to personal preferences rather than the actual performance of the toasters.

I stumbled across this one after researching and seeing the good reviews, we bought this one.

I burnt three slices of bread before I figured out the right setting but so far I'm very impressed. So is my husband. It may be quite expensive but worth it. All we hope for now is that it won't break.

It did toast the bread perfectly once I figured out what time setting I needed. It looks very slick, too.

Got this as I like gadgets, and it looks great. I received my first on 28th May 2014, chose J ohn Lewis due to their 2-year warranty, got a replacement after 1 yr as the slide down/up mechanism sometimes didn't work and hubby eventually got fed up with expecting toast and I couldn't provide it.

I've really loved this toaster but the love affair is waning because:
(1) I've had to gradually turn the lever to darker and darker to achieve the same medium amount of colour, which means it's gradually taking longer to make the toast. I suspect this means the element will pack up eventually. The lever's now almost at maximum darkness setting. We may end up repeatedly using the "A Bit More" button. Drops 1 star.
(2) I wish it would beep just BEFORE it lifts the toast up, so that you can watch it. It beeps only AFTER the toast has arisen from the abyss. Drops half a star.
(3) The beep is rather quiet - a louder beep and/or a repeating beep would be useful. Drops half a star.

Perfect crisp toast with a moist chewy centre.

I was very dubious if this was worth the high cost but good toast, crispy and evenly coloured on the outside, moist and chewy on the inside, and piping hot, is one of the pleasures in life. I finally took the plunge when it was on a very good special offer.

I've tried a few other toasters and been horrified at the travesties of toast they produced - pale uneven slabs that are dried out rather than toasted, slow, luke warm, fussy over sizes and thickness of bread. If you enjoy good bread, especially if you make your own, this toaster does your bread justice.

The toaster is large, 15 x 7.5 inches (38 x 9 cm) but not huge on the worktop. With the buttons on one end it is obviously made to use running from the front to back of the worktop. Mine sits quite happily at the end of the worktop run against the wall. However I have had it in different positions and it works fine lengthways against the back wall. My cupboards are high up and don't get too hot from the toaster but I pulled it out when using it.

The lead is short at 2 foot long (60 cm) but I prefer this to a long lead that gets in the way and is messy. The lead is attached a few inches from the switches end at the front. Being a 1800 watt machine the lead is quite chunky, and black.

The two toasting slots are 10" x 1.5 inches (25 x 4.25 cm) and I reckon it will take a one inch plus (2.5 cm) doorstep. It takes four slices of bread made in a Panasonic bread machine, and will obviously take long slices of artisan bread and pittas.

My standard homemade bread, 50% rye and 50% granary, toasts fine in 4.5 minutes from a cold start. The toast is lovely and hot and I've had to use silicone tongs to pick it up. Fruited teacakes have been toasted perfectly on the fruit bread setting. Bagels were successful. I haven't tried the frozen button. Crumpets were overdone at 3 minutes plus a bit more but I'm still putting the machine through its paces and learning our preferred timings. The take a look and a bit more buttons are really useful if you toast a variety of different breads and buns.
The motorised cage automatically centres the bread or rolls as it lowers.

I've toasted supermarket part baked wholemeal rolls straight from the packet, our "who forgot to make the bread" standby, and they were good. Easier and more energy efficient than putting the oven on to finish them.

It's brilliant at doing 8 inch poppadoms. There is no need to oil them first, just have the tongs ready to turn them round so both halves get cooked, and be ready to whip them out quick as they overcook very easily.
Much easier than grilling and much healthier than frying.

The toaster has lights that count down the time left, and sounds a beep when the toast is done. You can mute the beep or choose low or louder beeps. I was always burning toast under the grill so the freedom to wander off and do other things while toasting is brilliant.

The motorised centre, descend, and lift is great. So lovely and quiet, no great clang as springs operate. Like other people I do worry about the longevity of fancy gadgets and work on the principle that the cleverer it is the more there is to go wrong, but the toaster does have a two year warranty. I notice newer models only have a one year warranty.

Would I pay the full price? Perhaps if I had seen one at a friends house and realised how good it is - but it was the offer that made me jump in and buy. I don't consider any of the other toasters I've tried as worth bothering with and would have returned to toasting under the grill if I hadn't found this one.
