A journey through Western Crete written by a former SOE officer who was responsible for guerrilla organisation and action in the area against the occupying German forces in WW2. He recalls how the year-long stay 7 years after the end of the war was the result of his deep desire to go back and see the places and people he had known in war but in the new context of peace. It is almost as though Fielding had to check that it had not been all a dream. The book is beautifully written and quite forthright about his likes and dislikes of what he found on his return so that the reader is not drawn in to a romantic nostalgia about the fabulously hospitable Cretans and their 'noble savagery'. Having spent some time myself among very similar people in Cyprus I can attest to the opinions that he expresses while it must be said that everything he says is, in my experience, fair comment. The whole book is very even-handed and full of insight. In my humble opinion, a classic of its kind.

Fielding was laying ghosts for himself by returning to Crete. He writes well though sometimes obscurely, and without the panache of Leigh Fermor. Fascinating how some of the local/regional characteristics still prevail, 60 years on. Having always thought that Loutro was a bit claustrophobic, I shall look at it in a new way.
