Not every success needs a sequel. Compared to the excellent vol. 1 there are several problems with this vol. 2. It is much more fragmented with many more contributors, perhaps all flocking to become part of a success. In other words, vol. 1 had longer articles with all the space needed and wanted by the author to deal with a given subject. The typical vol. 2 article is longer than a "mere" useful tip, but too short to really go anywhere - in other words: empty calories, idling... - This is all not to say the book is worthless, far from it , here and there it definitely has it highs as well the (too many) lows - hence two stars after all.

There is no doubting the quality and content in this title. If I am 100% honest then I was disappointed that this book is thinner than version 1, by some 160 pages but has a similar chapter count, this, to my mind, means we are not diving quite so deep. There are lots of new areas covered and lots of new names as authors so it is still well worth investing in.

Level 400 - i.e. for MCITP+ depth
As good as the first 'deep dives' book.

Make sure you contact the publisher if you want the pdf version though, Amazon purchases do not automatically update their database.

The articles here are all very good. I cannot say enought good things about the book. If you have or haven't attended a SQL Saturday or a SQL pass summit, read this book to see what you are missing or strengthen concepts presented at these SQL events.

OK, I've been doing SQL Server work since 1994. This book if anything is a shallow dive. The only reason to buy it is because the proceeds go to a charity.
