This is a fantastic album. It's not as good as Burning Japan Live, but it holds its own very well. The gig was recorded during the Songs in the key of rock album tour and features three tracks from the album. The set opens with a storming version of Can't stop the flood and closes with the heavenly You keep on moving. It also features songs from his days in Trapeze and Deep purple. Well worth buying, but i recommend the version with the two studio bonus tracks, The Healer and Change.

I have to start with a confession, I'm a big Glenn Hughes fan. But, and there's a big but, not all his studio albums hit the mark. Highlights over the recent years are both HTP albums, Fused (with Tony Iommi), the last GH Album, Soul Mover, and most definitely, Live in the City of Angels.

Chad Smith from the Chili Peppers is on drums, with the excellent regular guitarist JJ Marsh beside him, and this album highlights Glenn's career to perfection over 2 discs, which make for an outstanding double live CD.

In chronoligical order, we get several tracks from Trapeze, including the classic ballad, Coast to Coast (also featured on Hughes Thrall), Mistreated and 3 Purple tracks from Mark 4, with the highlight being the Hughes/Bolin track Gettin' Tighter. First Step of Love from Hughes Thrall is in there, plus a selection of solo tracks from the last few albums, with Written All Over Your Face the highlight.

Seeing Glenn live is one of the highlights of any year, as the man has one of the best voices in rock music, which is why genuine rock giants such as Chad Smith and Tony Iommi want to work with the man.

This CD highlights his songwriting, great bass playing and most of all that voice. "The Voice of Rock" has never sounded in such great form. Cast aside any doubts you might have, and pick up one of the best double live albums ever recorded. Glenn Hughes rocks.

HASH(0x972220cc) out of 5 stars Phenomenal live C.D.!! 1 May 2005
By William Lee - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This C.D. is a must for all fans of Glenn Hughes and/or rock music in general. The first things that hit you are the sheer quality of Glenn's voice and the quality of the musicians in the band behind him. Since his days with Trapeze, Glenn Hughes has been producing great music and he just keeps getting better (as can be attested by listening to his new album 'Soul Mover'). There is not a bad nor an average track on this wonderful double album (in fact, I have never come across a bad or average track on any Glenn Hughes album), but I do recommend the prospective buyer to listen to the track 'Written All Over Your Face' in which Glenn's voice soars. This live version (the original is to be found on 'Songs In The Key Of Rock') still gives me goose bumps when I listen to it and I can't begin to count how many times that I have played it. To anyone who is reading this who doesn't have 'Soulfully Live In The City Of Angels', in their collection, then I advise you most strongly to get it. You will not be disappointed; I promise!!! The voice of Glenn Hughes and his music continue to be an inspiration to me.

HASH(0x97222120) out of 5 stars Glenn 'voice of rock' Hughes DVD a must for ROCK fans! 10 Sept. 2008
By Bela - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Glenn Hughes has always had one of the most original
and greatest voices in rock but has mostly been
ignored in the USA by critics and radio. Hughes is
one of the classic hard rockers like UFO, Thin LIzzy,
Y&T, AC/DC that are still around because of die hard
fans of "real rock" not MTV or NU metal crap that is
out there today. His music and songwriting is brilliant
and of course 'the voice' like no other. This DVD has it
all from Trapeze, Deep Purple and his solo material. The
footage is not the greatest video but filmed in a small
studio with limited fans it's raw and feels live! I did
notice that some overdubbing must have been done because
some singing and playing isn't on time but who cares! I
think this is a must for any Hughes or "real rock" fan
out there who wants great rock n roll.

HASH(0x979e7c0c) out of 5 stars Must have for Hughes Fans 21 Nov. 2007
By JP - Published on Amazon.com

It appears that there are several versions of this in release and the version that I originally purchased and reviewed has since disappeared so I thought I'd re-post for those who are wondering about this CD/DVD set.

That original release had quite a lot of critisim, and some unfavorable reviews, which I really didn't understand, especially considering all the garbage that IS out there masquerading as concert DVDs.

I bought what seems to be the same as this - the version that has 3 discs; 2 CDs and a DVD. The video is good, not great, and certainly not "filmed with a camera-phone". Though it does have a little too much "arty-farty" visuals for my taste. I've never been a fan of what I call stutter-step video (where it looks like a strobe is on the band) and would rather have straight-up video. Maybe that's what some others are critizing as well, but, to me, that's a small complaint. The audio, on the other hand, whether stereo or 5.1, is AWSOME.

The band is great (the singer from Quiet Riot AND one of Santana's singers from the 70s do background vocals on some songs!!!) and Glenn's voice is as powerful as ever. And, as others mention, the Chili Peppers's drummer, Chad Smith, is outstanding!!!

The only thing is, never having been a big Trapeze fan, I could have done with more Hughes solo songs and less Trapeze.

And, from reading some reviews of the other versions, it seems that another major complaint is that it is filmed in a really small place and everyone's sitting on rugs on the floor. But heck......it's an L.A. FAN CLUB show!!!! It's supposed to be intimate!!! While I agree it's not the best place to film a DVD, it's still good and I would love to have been there!!!

Overall, while I agree it could have been better, I really like it and would recommend it to ANY fan of Glenn Hughes. If it was cheaper I'd say don't believe the naysayers and check it out for yourself, but it is pretty pricey in these days of $12-15 DVDs!!

HASH(0x97a5a3d8) out of 5 stars A great live album 26 Nov. 2009

In Soufully, Glenn Hughes show to us an incredible performance, having Chad Smith on drums, JJ Marsh and George Nastos on guitars and Ed Roth on keyboards. Special versions to deep purple classics like Gettin' Tigher, You Keep On Moving and Mistreated, as well an impeccable version of Medusa, from Trapeze and new songs from Glenn Hughes' career. The box have yet a DVD, showing approximately 90 minutes of the show, where Glenn Hughes and band are appearing in an magnificent performance. Very high recommended!!!
