Let me first start by saying that this is by no means ellen's fist cd as an artist rather than dj. She has released "Standtkind", "Berlinette", "Thrills" and "Orchestra of Bubbles (with Apparat)". So it is actually her 4th album as an artist.
This album is different from the others she has released but that, by that doesnt mean its not good. By no means is it "unimaginative in the extreme" as the 1st reviewer put it. On the contray, nor does it lack any musicality, it is more minimal than her previous releases but the overall atmosphere of it is amazing. I would agree that you shouldn't buy it without listening to any of it at first, it may well take a few listens to get to grips with, but when you do you will realise that it truly is a great album by a great artist/dj.

i'll tell u what happened! ellen allien must have forgotten to put some of the beats on here or something. maybe she got a little bit to big for her own boots with this concept based offering. i don't know. whatever happened this album hits just wide of the mark. i fell in love will ellen after her 2005 sonar set blew me away and have followed her since quite closely. as u can imagine i was so pleased to find her new album... and then i heard it. its still full of her delicious sounds like before but way more abstract and way more minimal. perhaps a little too minimal. its still sounds great but its just a little harder to grasp than other albums (especially orchestra of bubbles). if i were u i'd go buy her other stuff (especially berlinette). learn to love it. then buy this. its good. and i do need to listen to it a few more times. but it isn't and i don't think will ever be great to my ears. the little story on the insleeve is pretty weak and seems like an afterthought to cover her tracks. anyway. go see her live and she will blow u away. this album wont.

I was looking forward to Ellen Allien's latest album, based on her previous ones having a great electronic sound, most noticably in my opinion on "Orchestra of Bubbles" with Apparat, which had a brilliant atmosphere to it.

However, Sool, in my opinion is a big disappointment. I'm all for doing something different, but Sool is just confusing and isn't a great display of Allien's talents not only as a DJ, but as a singer. Tracks like "Way Out" and "Bubbles" from the past used her voice to great effect, but this doesn't come through at all on Sool. "Caress" was promising at first, but there is nothing really here that excites at all. As for the overall sound, it feels very weak to me, and there is no song that stands out.

I am surprised by Sool, especially considering this is by Ellen Allien, and it really doesn't sound like her. It is most definately the inferior album in comparison with previous works "Thrills" and "Orchestra of Bubbles" to name a few, which captured the imagination of listener, and I would recommend all her music, except Sool.

Takes a while to get into, play it loud whilst driving and it'll find you. Hard to see the negative reviews as this is subtle and mesmeric, time will tell. Give it that time and you will be rewarded.....
OK now it's several weeks later and what do I think now? I have to say there is one 'song' on this album where Ellen sings, that is Frieda. Avoid this song if possible it's the only disappointment. She's not a singer really. It's mawkish and doesn't fit in with the rest of the album.
The rest - as long as you don't expect tunes and look for atmosphere and feeling instead - Sool is so far one of a kind and needs to be appreciated that way. Because it's such a departure I still rate it at 5 despite 'Frieda'.

I have been impressed by ellen allien's DJ sets in the past- but this is her first album as an artist rather than DJ, and it is clear she should continue being a great DJ. This cd is unimaginative in the extreme, lacking any musicality. It sounds like music made by someone who is not a musician (surprise surprise). Do not waste your money without hearing this first. Instead by the brilliant Fabric set she did a year or two ago.
