It is always worth downloading and then PROPERLY READING the instruction manuals of products before you buy them to ensure they do what you want them to.
If, say for example you have a spdif/Toslink enabled soundcard, and you only have a 3.5 mm socket, for Toslink capability you need to enable the Toslink operation in the card's software settings, then you should see light showing from the spdif/Toslink 3.5mm socket; this is where you stick this adapter to use a standard Toslink cable and attach to a Toslink enabled amplifier.
Some spif/Toslink enabled soundcards allow for the link to be used for input as well as output and a setting in the software will have a switch that'll allow whether the card uses the jack to send or receive DIGITAL signals.
If the spdif/Toslink is used as a spdif connection it is not using laser to send the signal but an electronic pulse down a wire, not fibre optic. Again depending on your equipment it may be able to send or receive signal by this system.
Now that you might have a better understanding of the technology this is used for, IE Toslink (Optical digital transmission of sound) you'll realise it's pointless buying it for spdif (wired digital or analogue operations) as it is not designed for the system of operation.
It is tiny, but it holds the optic cable connection fine, and it sturdily fits into my iMac jack, with no worry for it falling out.
So, if you need this, get it.
