*** Installation ***
Installation was quick and easy - taking just a few minutes to install!
Previous to this aerial, I had used a loft aerial made by the same company. The problem I had found with the previous aerial was that it was massive in comparison and made positioning the aerial difficult. This aerial however is the complete opposite.
Due to its size, it is much easier to install and position. Once the bracket is in position, you simply need to twist the dome around in order to position it in the direction of your nearest transmitter. Now you might expect with the product being smaller, that the signal strength would suffer, however this provides a much better picture than the previous loft aerial.
Many of the other reviewers seem to suggest having the booster positioned by the TV. Personally I chose to position the booster in the loft by the aerial. I've always preferred to have the booster near the aerial itself as this always seemed to make more sense to me, and means the booster isn't out on show.
Amazon recommends purchasing this aerial with the Philex SLx - 27867R Digital TV Signal Strength Meter. This seemed like a good idea and although I was impressed with the build quality of the Signal Meter, I personally don't think it was necessary as I already knew the general direction of the transmitter and this didn't seem to be accurate enough to position any more accurately than I could by eye. I would imagine this would have been more useful for larger aerials where it is trickier to position but with the Digidome, I wouldn't bother.
*** Pro's ***
✓ Much smaller and lighter than a standard loft/outdoor aerial - making it easier to install and less likely to cause damage in the event of it being blown loose.
✓ Advertised as an outdoor aerial, however can be used in loft space too. Have even read reviews of people placing this aerial on top of fridges/wardrobes and attached to outside walls at ground level.
✓ Good built quality.
✓ Comes with a decent length of Coax Cable provided with the aerial.
✓ Much more reliable than a standard indoor aerial.
*** Con's ***
- The aerial support tube and bracket is ferrous metal thinly coated with paint. People planning on using the aerial outside may want to give it another coat of paint to avoid rusting.
Whilst other building work was being done we temporarily fitted this in the loft - easy due to its compact size even in a loft which is quite a tight fit for space - and found that it gave good reception to a single aerial point even without plugging in the amplifier so just using it as a standard unpowered aerial. We are in a strong signal area so this may not be the case for you, but it is reassuring that even when installed indoors and unpowered this is capable of giving good reception. We now doubt that we will not bother with moving this outside at all.
This is simple to install and set up although with only one minor concern that I did think that the reel of coax cable this came with was not very good quality so replaced this with a better substitute. That aside this is highly recommended.
After reading others reviews on how brilliant this Digidome is I placed my order. Well thinking that height probably still matters I bought a piece of 2m long, 55mm PVC waste pipe to make a mast for the Digidome put a blanking plate and F-connector socket in the base and mounted it in the existing chimney bracket with new rawlbolts. I ran the wires on the inside of the pipe to yet again reduce wind resistance. Well the Digidome is about 200mm in diameter and the shape of mushroom....the neighbours have nicknamed it my flag pole.....but I call it just fantastic because regardless what direction I turn it in I get 100% signal strength on all English TV channels and 1080i or 1080p HD depending on channel and occasionally Dolby Digital 5.1 depending on the transmission. Much more though I decided to try to optimise the direction by a little rotation of the Dome and discovered many extra channels once I retuned my receiver and now I have all the French HD channels with Dolby Digital sound as well since I'm only 30 miles from France across the water. I only get max 68% signal strength on the French Channels but perfect picture and sound by just tweaking the rotation of the Digidome small amounts until I received zero bit rate errors....viewed on the receivers transmission detail screen....I think most TVs and Receivers have this function. Well there you go I couldn't be more happy and am about to remove the second ugly metal antenna from my roof in favour of a sleek second Digidome. Happy days!
