The box looks impressive with a window displaying the trainer. Under the cheap plastic internal packaging comes a set of gel pads and a charging plug and cable. There is also a wad of instructions in various languages.
It took about half an hour to charge. Then the frustration started. It just did not connect to my phone. I downloaded the App which took no time. The app seemed intuitive and I registered for an account. As instructed, I turned on the SIXPAD and it started squalking with an annoying, cheap sounding beep like an old digital watch. It then invited me to pair to my phone which I did. That was as far as it got. It beeped and beeped until it eventually said it had failed to connect. I rebooted my iPhone, I tried again and again but with no joy. I tried 'forgetting' the device and repairing it but to no avail.
It has a manual mode but I feel that for this cost, that defeats the object. I wanted a training belt that I could control using the App, that is the whole point and I was very disappointed that I was unable to get it to work.
The feel of the belt is a bit cheap and flimsy. It is made of moderate quality rubber and the central button bank feels cheap and nasty. They recommend that the gel contact pads are replaced once a month and that would set you back £24 which would cost another £300 ish pounds a year - not what I signed up for.
So, in summary - didn't work, costs a bomb and consumables need to be factored in. No thanks SIXPAD
The downsides: the instructions aren't great and the App doesn't seem to work, so it needs to be operated manually. Also the build quality and finish doesn't seem to match the price range and the trainer seems very similar to alternatives that are a small percentage of the current price.
If there's a huge price reduction at some point, then maybe this could be recommended as it seems to do the basic job well enough, but there's nothing about it that justifies a premium price tag.
There are two other slightly concerning permissions - your location and your contacts - that the app requires to enabled in order to work.
However there is a manual backup option, i.e. fit the device to yourself and press the +/- buttons to control the intensity of the workout, and this works fine.
