At the beginning of the story we meet Savannah, just graduated from college, discovered she is pregnant, and on the verge of leaving her abusive partner, Tyson. Problem being, Tyson is one if the biggest business names in Texas. A shock proposal and an "episode" after, and she takes her chance and flees. Her worn out self is discovered sleeping in her car by Sin, part of the Devil's Fury MC. From that moment, their lives are changed forever...
There are a couple of different stories flowing through this book, but they weave together perfectly. We discover what life is like in a MC, how lives can be wrecked; but then someone like Savannah comes along and changes the whole path of life.
I did find the first three quarters dragged a little; I was dying for a bit more action and so I read this a bit slower than usual. It wasn't until the last 25% I was really engrossed and couldn't stop reading, when all of the action kicked off with everything it had been building up to. The story also involves dark subjects like human trafficking, and boy is there some torture that goes on - it was gruesome but I loved it!
Regarding the characters, I detested Tyson from the off and it only got worse. Savannah, I loved how her strength built up, though she had fight from the off. Sin, he was emotionally scarred but protective and I adored him. We also meet other members of the MC; Cut, Sin's brother and Devil's Fury leader - he was likeable; Lick, he was hilarious but he has hidden depths and I can't wait to read his story next! Jenni, Savannah's best friend - also a funnier character and I kind of hope her and Lick get it on!; and Sin's mother, Bianca.
Overall it was a great storyline, fairly well written with likeable characters and development, but I'm giving it 3.5* purely because it took me so long to really get into it, and Sin's overuse of the pet name 'sugar' towards Savannah grated on me a bit.
Matthew aka Sin is part of the MC which is now run by his brother Cut, after the brutal death of their father by a rival MC. Sin has been more or less on the outskirts of the MC, especially after the deaths of his father and sister. Wanting a life away from the MC he had four years in the military before he was medically discharged after a battle injury. Sin has a constant inner guilty dialogue for not being the saviour of his family or his comrades. When he finds a damsel in distress on the roadside in her high class car. He resolves to save her rather than turning a blind eye.
Waking up in a strange room and looking into the eyes of the man that saved her, Savannah is surprised by how safe she feels in this stranger’s room. Running from a life of abuse and violence at the hands of the man who was supposed to love and cherish her, she is more than glad she is finally safe. But her ex does not give up and hunts her down. This is the catalyst for Savannah searching for the strength to be free and for Sin to be her saviour.
Both the main characters are striving to find the answers to all that is wrong in their lives and how to survive the aftermath. The relationship between Sin and Savannah was therefore an extreme slow build and the romance was late in coming into the storyline. The MC world was told with a slightly different slant and there were some things I found a little strange. For instance the way that Sin simply took orders from his brother. I could understand that as the Pres of the MC that his word was final but somethings he said to Sin just wouldn’t be how a man, especially one who cherishes family would speak with his brother. This is turn made me look as Sin as a little wimpy at times and I’m all for an alpha man showing his softer side, but in this instance it put me off a bit. I also couldn’t understand the reason for Savannah’s (weird and freaky) ex and how he continued to pursue her as no reason was given. Don’t get me started on the ex’s mother, she was another weirdo!
Overall this was an enjoyable start to a new series and hopefully the darker side that took place in the ending of the book, gives the next books a little more grit and punch. Lick’s book is next up and his outlandish behaviour can only be hiding some deep hurt. I just hope the romance doesn’t take as long for him though!
Savannah is stuck in an abusive relationship. When things go from bad to worse, Savannah knows she can't stay any longer. She knows she has to be the one to protect herself but she's not counting on Sin involving himself. I really liked Savannah. She's a surprisingly strong woman who even though her spirit has been bent, she's in no way broken by what she's been through.
I adored Sin. He's holding so much guilt and blame inside, there's no wonder he's so troubled. He's living a life he wouldn't necessarily have chosen but he's doing what he feels is the right thing. And that's a running theme with Sin. He's a protector, he's always looking out for his loved ones, he needs to keep them safe and when he meets Savannah, those protective instincts come out in full force.
This book is a bit of a slow burn (which I love). You get plenty of background so you feel like you have a connection with the characters. There's plenty of other characters that add to this story and help you get a sense of what the Devils Fury MC is all about. There's baddies for you to hate and you will hate some of them I guarantee it. A sweet but strong relationship that builds up throughout the book that had me praying for a HEA for Savannah and that has left me desperate for more from this series. I'm ready and waiting for Licks book which is next but it's Hawks story that I'm dying to get my hands on.
