This phone, for me, redefines the Android experience.
I particularly wanted a dual SIM phone, as I need a work phone for being on-call as well as my personal phone. Having the ability to fit two SIMs into one phone has simplified my life!! I no longer have to worry about keeping two phones with me and making sure they are both charged.
So - onto some more about this phone.
It really is up there at "flagship" level.
32GB memory, 3GB ram, Octa-core processor, Dual SIM, superb cameras (more on that in a minute), a really good screen, great feel and finish.
It's certainly a big phone, but it doesn't feel bulky in use. It just feels solid and well made.
I've read professional reviews that say the phone is mostly plastic, but it really doesn't look or feel like that at all. The sides are solid brushed aluminium and the back is a beautiful glossy carbon fibre material - Again, professional reviews say that this has a clear plastic covering, but I am not totally convinced that is isn't glass (much like the old Google Nexus 4). All in all the phone has a totally premium look and feel.
In use it is fast and responsive. Swipes are as smooth as silk and Apps open quickly and smoothly and the whole device feels like it really isn't being stressed by anything I have asked it to do.
I have read mixed reviews on the Huawei Emoticon UI - Personally I like it. I've used vanilla Android for some time, and this overlay feels smooth and professional and adds to the basic Android experience. Some reviews commented on the lack of "App Drawer" but I haven't missed that at all. Some of the added features are really rather nice. The Phone Manager App is very nice - instantly notifying you of open applications using up memory and battery power and closing them for you in one go. The built in home screen clock and weather App is one of the nicest I have seen, automatically giving you a dual time-zone/weather-zone when you go out of your home area.
Dual SIM functionality is great - but has some limitations you should be aware of. To use two SIMs you need 1xMicro SIM and 1x Nano SIM. The Nano SIM occupies the second tray in the phone that can also be used for a SD card - so you can't have both dual SIM functionality and extra storage space - but with 32GB on board, that should not be too much of a problem.
It would also seem that only the Micro SIM can operate in 3G/4G mode - with the second SIM relegated to calls and 2G - Again this is not a huge problem, but something to be aware of. The SIM management tool is very nice, giving you the options of which SIM to use by default for calls and texts etc.
Now - on to one of the other main reasons I wanted this phone - the camera.
This really is (or should I say these really are) very impressive indeed! On the back are 2 x 8 mega-pixel cameras that work together to produce up to a 13 mega-pixel image. The camera starts quickly, focuses quickly and just feels really responsive.
It's real party trick though is something called Wide Aperture Mode - This does something clever using the two cameras to build an image of the depth of field of the picture - and then once you have taken the picture it lets you change the point of focus! This can produce really stunningly different results from just one image and everyone I have shown this to has been hugely impressed by it.
It also does other things such as panorama mode, and a very fast HDR mode that again I think uses the two cameras in tandem.
It also has a very good ultra long exposure night time mode that can produce amazing shots as long as you can find somewhere to rest the camera for up to 15 seconds - Watching it build the image is also rather fun!
I also has a instant photo mode - double tap the volume down button, even if the phone is asleep, and it will instantly take a snap-shot.
The front facing "selfie" camera is also a step up on most front cameras. Again it is an 8 mega-pixel camera that takes really very good images. In selfie mode it has a few extra features such as a count-down timer and a "beautify" mode that does a bit of face detection and softens the image slightly - my daughter liked this bit!
Another plus point is the really rather huge battery, which combined with some intelligent battery management, and the phone telling you when Apps are using background power, means that the battery can last as much as 2 days with moderate use. You certainly have no worry at all about the phone lasting a full day with even heavy use.
Call quality has been exceptionally good - certainly superior to my previous phones - It seems to get and hold a signal really well.
I have not been able to test 4G connectivity, as I don't have a 4G SIM, but 3G has been fast and reliable, as is Wi-Fi.
Music playback seems pretty good too - A set of quite nice ear-buds are provided (something many manufacturers are leaving out now to cut costs). These sound pretty good and the volume level seems a bit louder than my last couple of phones.
I should also point out that this is a totally UK specification device, provided with a full UK 3 Pin plug charger in the box.
Overall I am delighted with this purchase.
The two reasons I purchased it for, i.e. the dual SIM functionality and the Dual Camera, for me alone make this device a perfect purchase.
The camera is quite interesting giving you the option to blur different parts of a photo .,. during i believe and definitley post production (im still playing with this) apparently its a feature DSLR's have .. it features 2 8mp cameras at the back and one at the front with a beauty feature to remove your spots (lol) .the 2 rear camera combine to create a software engineered 13mp image should you want it .. night shots are apparently good due to this dual camera setup .. but various reviews point to the use of a tripod to stop blurring etc ..
android wise apparently its a few steps behind the latest version and shows no signs of updating but as its a custom interface you cant really tell.. the screen has a main apps and then a favourite apps pop up separate area which is handy but unused really at the minute except for chrome ...
all in all a nice phone at the price 4g .. and its nice to have 32gb of ram onboard !!
What I can say is it performs perfectly. Browser is fast. Screen is bright, very clear. And the keyboard is a decent size so not many spelling mistakes.
Both camera's are good. I suppose the one small niggle is the second simm uses the sd card slot, so you cannot use both at once. Not an issue for me. And it uses the iPhone style of a pin to open the card drawers. But so far I recommend it. Comes with a decent screen protector, no bubbles!
And charger and ear phones. Nicely boxed too, not the usual flimsy soft cardboard.
