They have sh*t preamps.
Now what are preamps? Think of it like this, the audio signal from a microphone is nearly always too low for it to be picked up well. So you have these things called preamps which - you guessed it - amplifies the audio signal to usable levels.
Everything that accepts a mic to be inserted has a preamp.
DSLRs have the worst preamps, ever. My guess is all the hiss people have been complaining about is because the gain (sensitivity of the preamps) of their DSLR was set high-ish. This causes a hiss. Just buy a cheap preamp and it will be fixed.
So the hiss isn't necessarily the manufacturers fault but DSLRs.

That was all I could make out.
Unusable. Don't waste your time or money.
There was initially a lot of hissing noise; it was too high for me to have any decent useable audio in my shots so I figured maybe it needs a little help in picking up sound...
That's when I bought a cheap headphone amplifier to help boost the audio. I plugged it in and hey presto; it was awesome. The hissing noise was reduced and the pickup noise substantially improved.
I didn't have too much budget to spend so I wasnt expecting a lot however; this product together with a headphone amp. cost me £30-£35 all together and it feels like a more expensive mic.
All in all good if you want a cheap mic. that picks up fine sound but better quality if you dont mind adding an amplifier too it.
I needed to do post processing in Audacity (Free software) to remove noise and improve the overall sound.
If you have got a bit more money to spend i would recommend you get the ATR2100-USB, which has a lovely sound and is perfect for voice overs.
