If you ever owned a Megadrive,or are looking for a value packed collection of 16-bit classics (albeit Sega branded not Nintendo :P ) then look no further here .

*Some* of the finest SEGA franchises are represnted here, and pretty faithful emulations of the originals.Sonic the Hedgehog is finally playable at full 60 Hrz mode, after being reduced to the measly 50 Hrz on the 1st Sonic Mega Collection ,screen sizes can be adjusted, extra games can be unlocked and short but intresting interview segments of the original programmers/designers (bar Sonic creator Yuji Naka ).

However, perhaps due to licencing problems, some classics are not in this compilation-NO Streets of Rage 1-2-3,E-Swat,Allisa Dragoon,Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion ,Super Hang On,Super Monaco GP,Shining Force etc.

A real shame,but maybe if there's a second compilation...

And why..OH GOD WHY!! Is Altered Beast here..?? Arggh!!!

Phantasy star was a great rpg especially number 4, I also enjoyed kid chameleon, sonic and can't wait to play and this will be an essential collection (especially due to the price of phantasy star 4 to buy now) the lack of streets of rage is a pain but that maybe due to the fact that streets of rage was released with sonic gems collection in the US (but was dropped in the uk due to the fact they would be including a violent game which sega considered would cost a lot of sales to kids)

The Sega Mega Drive is the jewel on the Gaming Crown in my household, my mother bought one when she was pregnant with me and it's been part of our family since then. Even though I've moved onto bigger and better consoles such as the PS2, Gamecube and so on, the Sega Mega Drive still holds its own and is the home of some of the best games ever.

When I heard of this release, and pre-ordered it, I had high expectations. Sadly, most of them were crushed.

A good 70% of the games available on this release are the same genres, most of them are platforms. Sonic is easily the best available on this disc, but others such as Altered Beast and Alex the Kidd have small likeability factor and short lifespans. The only thing that divides the platform games up is the character being controlled and the graphics.

However there are several other titles that shine and are a welcome addition to this collection; The Phantasy Star games (great RPGS), Golden Axe (platform based but with 2 player action and variation in gameplay), the Ecco series (one of the most original and hardest game ever created) and the puzzle based games such as Columns offer variety for this title.

Despite the above mentions, there are many other titles that are easily top of the Sega Mega Drive library and yet are not seen on this collection. Other reviewers on this site have said many good examples (namely Streets of Rage); mine include `Wonderboy in Monster World', `Soleil', `Quackshot' and `Dynamite Headdy'. To me, these games are the cream of the Sega Mega Drive crop, unlike some of the titles in this release.

One thing I noticed is the flow of gameplay, if you have "Sonic Mega Collection" you'll also pick this up.

I'll start now and say I only got this for the 3 Phantasy Star games 2-4,although I'd never played most of the games on here on a Megadrive, save for Altered Beast,Sonic and Bonanza Bros.I knew what they were like,I'm not going to bang on about what should have been on there, the only one that pops into mind for me was maybe Toejam and Earl,it has a great number of options, you can even play in progressive scan, rescale the screen etc.
The one thing I didn't notice at first was the ability to save anywhere, this is a godsend as most of these old games had little or no save system, this makes games like Golden Axe slightly more playable and Sonic a bit of a walkover. Some games are still terrible mind you,all in all fun for a while, and it beats getting those 'vintage' ones off of Xbox live!
I'd just like to point one thing out though, when you unlock the cheat sheet, you will find a lot of the cheats to be incorrect,e.g Sonic's level select cheat needs you to press the square button,it's the cross etc.

This is just a quick heads up.

In the listing above it states that Shadow Dancer: The secret of Shinobi is on the disc.

This is false. This game only exists on the U.S release of Sega Megadrive collection!!

It's a shame because Shadow Dancer is an excellent game and worthy addition (maybe not quite as worthy as revenge of shinobi would have been!!!)

If you ever had a mega drive and liked it then get this, its a good trip down memory lane and fun however it misses some vital games one of which being one of the best 'Streets of Rage' trilogy, gutted thats not in it or Street Fighter 2 however its still a good old skool compilation of games we never thought we'd play again!

Not the best selection of games .You may think some were left out and some shouldn't have been. Still there's enough fun in this collection. I particularly enjoy the Golden Axe saga and the Sonic games.
And don't forget the games are the Megadrive version and not the arcade version (the ones who had an arcade version). I know it is specified in the title but just in case...
