Great Follow-Up

Great Follow-Up
Arriving in a surprisingly small box, this is very much positioned as a follow-up to the 2019 Mega Drive Mini, with almost no games from that device returning here (I say almost, because it does contain the Mega CD version of Ecco the Dolphin, with the MD1 having the Mega Drive version, and where that machine contained Space Harrier II, this has an enhanced version beyond the capabilities of the original hardware. Sadly, while the MD2 has Earthworm Jim 2, the Mega CD version of the first game is not included).Emulation on the Mega Drive games is faultless from what I've seen so far. I did experience a bit of mild frame drops in Sonic CD, when moving through the air at speed, an issue I've seen in emulated versions of the game before, which are not present in the version in Sonic Origins (which is natively coded for each system, rather then being emulated). On a happier note, when you start Sonic CD, you get the choice of the US version, or the EU one that has the superior Japanese soundtrack (albeit at 50Hz, though you can change the system language to Japanese to get that soundtrack and the game at 60Hz). This is definitely a nice bonus. There's a wide and interesting selection of games here, including several previously Japan-only releases, and a handful of previously unfinished games brought to the Mega Drive for the first time. The only really notable omission is Sonic 3 & Knuckles, though I expect this is due to its inclusion in the Sonic Origins collection. It's a pity Sega couldn't do both, but I'm not surprised.Sadly only one controller is provided this time around, but thankfully it's based on the six-button pad (the mode button even acts as the menu button, though you can change that to "hold start" in the settings). The previous three-button pads from the MD1 work, plus you can use the RetroBit USB controllers (I recommend avoiding their wireless ones, as I found the battery died really fast, and you can't use them wired for some baffling reason).Regarding power requirements, I plugged the MD1 directly into one of my TV's USB ports. They apparently only provide 0.5A, and the MD1 says it requires 1A, but it worked fine. However, the MD2 says it needs 2A (presumably due to the slightly more powerful hardware required to run Mega CD games), and I wasn't confident enough that the TV could provide enough juice, so I dug out an old iPad plug, rated 2.1A, and that runs it perfectly. Beware though, there's no power light on the MD2 like there is on the MD1, and the power slider doesn't say "on" or "off" (left is on, weirdly). The controller is fine, with a reasonably long cable, but as I have an M30, I decided to use that. It took me a moment to remember how to connect it - it's been a while since I last used it - and though it had previously been paired with the MD1, it didn't want to connect to the Bluetooth dongle right away (there's a 2.4GHz version available too which is easier to connect). Once it did connect it didn't initially work, but thankfully I knew that this was resolved on the MD1 by holding up-left on the d-pad and the minus button for 5 seconds. Voila, we were in business (the button to the right of the minus button acts as the mode button, for menu access). It's a niche device aimed at retro enthusiasts and collectors. Though it is pricey, Sega said they are only producing limited numbers, particularly for the US and EU, so if you're thinking about picking it up, don't wait, because it might not last very long.

I grew up years ago with the Mega Drive 1 which I got for Christmas in 1991 with a copy of Sonic 1 and the Mega Games Collection. Gradually over the years, this big box got played and played and played and many years later packed up with the rigours of coping with a number of teenagers playing it continuously.

I have majority of the Mini consoles owning a Mega Drive Mini 1, SNES Mini, NES Mini, Playstation Classic and Super Retrocade. This was a no brainer for me. OK I have the know how to play games without these boxes but theres something about plugging in a Mini Console, playing a game with an original console and then playing something else. These consoles appear sturdily made with loads of options and whisper it quietly a little tinkering can do a lot more.

The Mega Drive 2 has the same look and style that makes the others look so good. Its sturdy as expected and powering it up has the same charm of its predecessor.

The games you have on this one are more of a treasure trove than the original. Gone is Sonic 1 and 2 and now you have Ristar, Soleil, Super Hang-on and more. The games play as well as they always did, some slight amendments - Streets of Rage 3 has omitted its controversial first level boss, Super Hang-On has changed some of its signs from cigarette brands to something which I haven't a clue what it is and Sonic CD play in Japanese language as its as choppy as hell if you play it on EU mode (which was how it played in the UK, but with modern luxuries doesn't hold up in 2022).

You have all variations here, switch to Japanese you have their local variations. Korean brings up the US styles.

Theres enough here for every Sega player but do stick with this console. Its not one you can just put on and expect to see everything you notice. Get the first if you want that. However what you do have is hidden gems, things you have never played but things you'll instantly love. Herzog Zwei for example is a headache at first and will take a lot of learning but once you do its easily one of the best ever RTS games released. Just persevere with it.

So much can be said for each of these games. Streets of Rage 3 if you play it normally and not easy is brilliant but incredibly hard. Golden Axe 2 is better than the original in every way, just harder and more complex. Ristar is a brilliant Sonic like game which is underloved when it was so technically advanced and Sonic 3D is excellent if you stop listening to people who love to hate it as Sonic doesn't run left to right.

The new games like Spatter and Super Locomotive aren't brilliant and you can see why they were thrown out in the 90s but Fantasy Zone and a suped up Space Harrier 2 which also comes with the original game are very good.

I would suggest any Sega fan buys this but you have to be ready to go back to your roots and give these games time. Back in the day I had 5 of these games. The original console I had 22 of those. But in fact I'm having fun discovering games I've never ever seen. A must buy for any retro gaming fan

For some reason Amazon delivered this to me three days prior to release so I have had a good chance to give this unit a run for its money and I can honestly say this is a must own for any retro gaming fan! It Includes some of the slightly more obscure and rare Mega Drive and CD titles in addition to some of the usual titles in these sort of Mega Drive/Genesis compilations.

There are several titles with alternative versions to play such as Space Harrier and Sonic CD (jp/us)!

I was slightly concerned that as this was going to be a limited release, it could have been a bit of a rush job - all those concerns have been completely quashed. A top quality product, just like the original Mega Drive Mini, albeit with a better controller!

I preordered this as I wanted my girls to play Night Trap over Halloween and it didn't disappoint.
There are 60 games to get stuck into and a great variety in the selection. Some games like Devi & Pii were an unexpected pleasure but there are 5 or 6 which I wonder why they were included. Could we not have got a Road Rash instead of two Outrun games? But overall satisfied.
The interface and save states are the easiest I have ever used.
I love that by changing the languages I can play the Japanese versions of games too.
Only one issue is that the console powers from a USB. I highly recommend that buyers use an adapter and plug it straight into the mains. Powering it off a TV or laptop doesn't work well, and it will randomly shut off.

So I didn't buy this myself, but I did receive it as a Christmas present and I've spent a few hours with it now.

First off I will say that I am a bit of a collector of these mini consoles (I have NES mini, SNES mini, Mega Drive 1 mini, Neo Geo mini, PC Engine mini, C64 mini, A500 mini and PS1 mini), so the Mega Drive mini 2 is right up my street.

My first impression was how small the packaging is - it's roughly half the size of the MD min 1. The system itself is only slightly smaller though, and is highly detailed, with a cartridge flap that opens, even though it is non-functional as with the first MD mini, it's a nice touch. The only slight blemish to the high quality is the fact that the system has a switch for the power, rather than a push button, as per the original European full size MD2, and the small centre power LED grille is also missing. I assume this was done to minimise production costs, and so each region's MD mini 2 is essentially the same, rather than being bespoke and fully faithful to the region specific aesthetics of the MD2. A minor niggle for sure, but slightly disappointing nonetheless.

This time around the system ships with a 6 button controller - albeit only one of them. This controller seems faithful to the original and works perfectly. It's a shame that, given the higher price over the first MD mini, only once controller is included, especially as the MD mini 2 includes quite a few multi player games, and one game (VS Puyo Puyo Sun) for which 2 player is almost mandatory. However, if you have the previous MD mini, or a wireless 8Bitdo controller, these will work just fine. In fact, my main controller for my MD mini 2 is the 8Bitdo MD30 wireless 6 button gamepad, which I bought for use with my MD mini 1, and it works perfectly with the mini 2.

Game wise, there's 60 on offer here, with a mix of standard MD games and mega CD games. Selection is a bit of a mixed bag, with some excellent inclusions such as my personal favourites - Final Fight CD, Sonic CD (featuring the EU and US variants, with differing soundtracks), and Splatterhouse 2, and Super Street Fighter 2, amongst classics such as Golden Axe 2. Then there's dubious inclusions like Clayfighter - a very average fighter at best, and can hardly be considered a classic.

The inclusion of Mega CD games is the obvious draw here, and the totals 12 games. Final Fight CD is easily the best of the bunch here, but it's also nice to see games like Night Trap and Silpheed included too. For me, as someone that never owned a Mega Drive and therefore never owned a Mega CD, the included games are a welcome addition, although I do wish Snatcher was included but given the lack of a Western translation I can see why it isn't.

In use I am happy to say I have not experienced the lag or sound issues that others have reported. In my experience the emulation - once again handled by M2, as with the first MD mini - is spot on. I have not experienced any lag, even when using my 8Bitdo wireless controller. The only thing I have noticed is that the sound - particularly in the CD games - is a bit muffled - however I don't think this is an emulation issue, and is more likely down to the very high compression of the audio files on the CD format.

Feature-wise there's not a lot to say. You have a choice between full screen and original aspect ratio, and can toggle the CRT filter on and off. There's a few wallpapers to select from and you can choose between sound emulation of either the MD1 and MD2, which is a nice, if mostly, ineffective touch, and of course you have your usual 4 slot save states per game. Also it's nice that there are some never before released games and also enhanced versions of Space Harrier 1 and 2 with proper sprite scaling, although the flickering in this game is quite intense at times. Still it's nice that we're getting something a bit new.

All in all I'm really happy with my Mega Drive mini 2, and it is a great addition to my mini console collection, and has a great range of games - some that are quite rare and expensive in physical form (Ranger X for example) so to have them here officially is a bit of a boon. Is it as good as the Mega Drive mini 1? For me, no. It's by no means a bad machine - in fact it's excellent - very well made and top notch emulation but the game selection doesn't quite live up to the first MD mini. Having said that, for me, as I didn't own a Mega Drive - having both the MD mini 1 and 2 is a no-brainer as it has given me exposure to games that I either never heard of, or never owned.

If you're a fan of mini consoles, retro gaming, Mega Drive or a mix of all of the above I highly recommend the Mega Drive Mini 2. I'm over the moon with mine :)
