With more and more games turning to the field of extreme sports, it was only a matter of time before one game tried to tackle them all. Sega Extreme Sports tries to do just that and does a pretty good job of it.
Rather than offer you the chance to play each sport individually like a sort of decathlon, Sega have opted for the rather original choice of rolling them into one, well sort of.
The levels, which are structured in such a way that you are completing in an ever-changing non-stop race containing at least three events sees you jumping on snowboards, bungee jumping, mountain biking, hand gliding and even sandboarding in a game that offers you that "I've got to get to the next stage feeling".
Couple this with a gruelling Championship mode and the usual array of time trails and bonus tracks and what you end up with is a very nice refreshing change. What Sega have managed to do is create a game that doesn't get bogged down in any one topic, but gives you a sample of them all in a fast-paced race. --Stuart Miles
Extreme Sports is a brand new concept in this genre in that it combines a multi-event sports game with all-out racing action! The player has the chance to bungee jump, fly a hand glider, race a mountain bike and ride a snowboard all in one "triathlon"-style continuous event! To succeed in this game you must master all the different events not merely excel in one! With four different characters, 11 standard tracks and six hidden ones this game represents a lasting challenge for every extreme sports fan.
Top customer reviews
First off, the graphics: there are occasional signs of pop-up & slowdown, but these are more than offset by the enormous terrains, well-modelled characters &, best of all, some very impressive lighting effects - as you come to the brow of a hill, the sun almosts blinds you...brilliant! It all shows that the much-maligned Dreamcast can still easily hold its own with so-called "superior" next generation consoles.
The music is entirely appropriate for each sport, & the voices distinctive & amusing - listen out for comments as you bump someone out of the way.
With a plethora of sports/simulation games on the market for all consoles, this one offers a good variety of arcade-style racing & track & field style button pressing/timing, & the inclusion of 6 different disciplines keeps it fresh & interesting...
This is a game to buy no matter what genre you're into. The only short coming of the game is that to get some of the extra tracks you must go onto their site via your console.
Fantastic!!! 5 Starts
