It's not delicious- but it's functional.
This stuff tastes better and is cheaper than sunwarrior.
Flavours are strong and take a bit of getting used to (I put a teaspoon of spirulina powder into the chocolate and it masked the pond-like flavour completely- anyone who has ever tasted spirulina can relate to this excellent discovery!). It mixes well into shakes as well as recipes (I made raw brownies with the chocolate and pancakes with the vanilla with great success. Bake your shake!). In shakes, I use a combination of half unsweetened soya milk and half water, often with a good sprinkle of cineamon in the chocolate to improve the flavour. The vanilla blends well with unsweetened soya milk, yogurt, and frozen berries for a high protein, low-sugar frozen sweet treat.
In terms of value, you really can't compare to any other vegan protein powder for the amount and balance of amino acids, the extra vitamins are a bonus too. At £15 for a 900g tub, this is a bargain. Keep an eye on the prices.
Cons- look out for the artificial sweetners. This is the only thing that puts me off- I think it's sucralose, and it's really not good for you! Consume in moderation and I reckon you'll be fine.
Not organic and no idea where (admittedly, vegan) ingredients are from- if sustainability is an issue might be better with more "natural" proteins.
I havn't tried the strawberry as i don't think it will be as vertistle for my recipes as the other two.
UPDATE - NEW FORMULA. Just got my 2nd tub of this and went for the strawberry, I knew that Sci-MX had discontinued this product and replaced it with Pro V-Gain (see what they did with the name?), but as this page was still showing the old product I thought that was what I was getting. Anyway, no point in returning it because as I said, they've stopped making the other one. So how does this new improved formula compare, well firstly on paper they have sacrificed a couple of grams of protein to bring in 3g of carbs, why I have no idea but as those carbs are mostly oats, they can kiss goodbye to the gluten free label. You still get a product free from any animal products and still boasting an impressive protein spread and you still get it for an incredibly good price, it is actually £3 cheaper here than it was on the Sci-MX website at the weekend when they were having thei black Friday 50% off sale.
Anyway, from reading the other reviews it seems that nobody cares about whats in this stuff or how healthy it is (or isn't) they just care about the taste.Read more ›
This shake provides a good solid source of protein to supplement your already protein-centric diet. Per serving (2 scoops) it contains:
37.21g of protein
1.06g of carbs
0.18g of which sugars
1.61g of fat
0.02g of which saturates
The consistency is very powdery, more so than most other shakes I've tried. This mainly creates an issue when hunting down the scooper inside. A task which seems impossible to do without creating an almighty mess. This is however rather irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
The protein mixes well as long as you mix it well. I failed to shake it long enough the first time out, and I got a lump stuck in the cap. Mix well and you won't have an issue.
The price on Amazon is the best that I've found anywhere, so if you're going to make a purchase, make it here.
Would I recommend this product to a friend? Yes
If lost/fully used would I repurchase product? Yes
- It's NEW!
- Mixes well (if done so for at least 30-60 secs)
- Amazon is cheapest around
- Very powdery (not a huge issue)
- Doesn't taste as good as the chocolate version
