Put simply this adapter means you take any external SATA hard drive and plug it into your PC using a USB slot, and then access it like it was nothing more than a flash drive. Anyone changing or maintaining PCs should have this, transfer and save documents or savegames easily and fairly quickly (don't forget to plug it into a USB 3.0 port for better speeds).
Adaptor provides power (from a mains socket) to the hard drive as well as making the SATA/USB connection. Plug it into your PC and access it easily. Does exactly what I wanted. Perfect.
HOWEVER, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and this issue is not unique to Anker - pretty much every power system with a USB output does it. I checked a bunch of cheap and expensive USB supplies at home and found that they *all* put 45-85v on the connector shell when not plugged into a device. A few knowledgeable reviewers of other products have tried to explain why this is “normal”, but I don’t get it. But I did try placing a 100k resistor to earth and that killed the voltage on the USB shell immediately, so the source is very high impedance and certainly not dangerous. The iMac’s body has an unusual textured/anodised finish, and that somehow made the sparking apparent. I tried to get it to spark against the brass earth pin in the mains socket, and couldn’t get any sparks to appear at all. The 85v AC was still there, it just wouldn’t spark.
I've bought several Anker products over the years and have always found them to be solid, reliable and pretty much the best of the bunch of the new Chinese vendors. After 7 years this HDD adapter is still working fine, so I can’t complain.

As you might expect, the body of the unit is made of plastic but so far there has been no indication of any sort of design- or manufacturing weakness and I would expect it to last many years with a little care.
The USB 3 cable part (ca 80cm long) is surprisingly stiff (it tries to retain its bent or coiled shape after unpacking) and will benefit from a careful straightening in a reasonably warm room.
The power cable section (I'm in UK so the unit came with a transformer-type 3-pin plug) is ca 150cm long.
Its not up to the usual Anker quality standards.
There is little or no strain relief on the USB3 connector so much of the strain from the (unavoidably) stiff USB3 cable falls on the solder pads at the back of the surface mount USB3 socket. Mine failed at this point. The solder failed on all 10 pads.
This indicates that the solder reflow thermal profile was not correct for the connector. Properly soldered joints should have ripped the pads off the printed circuit board. Instead the solder joints parted - all 10.
Its not possible to get the thermal profile right everywhere. Different parts take different times to heat and as surface mount parts go, the connector is huge.
Avoid this item and any like it that use a detachable USB3 cable. My sample showed a generic design and manufacturing problem that will not be unique to the Anker product. Find one where the USB cable cannot be removed. At least it won't have problems with the USB3 connector.
If I can't resolder mine and add a few drops of epoxy for connector strain relief, I'll need a replacement. It won't be one like this.
It worked well while it worked, which wasn't long.
The missing few drops of epoxy for connector strain relief, turned this review from 5 stars to 1 star.
