I'm a bit of a macro photographer at heart, and although this is not a macro lens, I decided to try it, teamed up with some Kenko extension tubes. The results are quite special, particularly when shot wide open, or at largish apertures, as the bokeh is very soft and sensual - 'buttery' is a great description, and I am very impressed indeed by it's performance (See some of my accompanying images in the gallery) At maximum f1.4 the softness is quite pronounced in the de-focused areas - to gain maximum sharpness and detail on critical studies of insects I would stop down a couple of clicks, but there is a magical quality to the images that is unique in my experience. I have used a Tokina 100 mm ATX pro D macro for most of my work, and it too is a fantastic lens in terms of clarity, but the Samyang has me hooked now, for it's 'sensual' feel. Focusing is, as you may have read, manual only, and the focusing ring is very precise and tight - I like that for accuracy and critical detail. The build quality feels very robust and well constructed, although the lens hood can be a bit fiddly to engage for some reason - must be me - and the lens cap is not as well made as a Nikon version, but overall the value of this lens is excellent, compared to the bigger player's equivalent offerings. I have noticed that when shooting with tubes - it will meter via the camera with the auto variety - that it can underexpose a little, so you may have to plus in some positive exposure compensation at times. My Tokina works better by underexposing the camera's meter value, so it takes a little while to understand it's behaviour. I would take care with the front optic, as it's fairly 'exposed' and keep the hood on, and/or use a clear filter to protect it, but you certainly will be impressed by the quality this lens delivers at such reasonable cost. Buy one and enjoy!

I am absolutely amazed by this lens. I was reluctant to the brand, reluctant to manual focus. Not anymore. This is a great lens, extremely sharp, even when used with a Nikon D90. The manual focus is really great, and, as long as you know that your camera is capable of confirming focus, you'll be fine.

**NOTE: This review is based on my Pentax mount version. I'm not sure if it works in Aperture Priority mode on all makes, or if the focus confirmation works for all makes.**

This is one of those rare lenses that proves to be relatively cheap, but also very very good. I have the Falcon version but it comes in many different brand names including Samyang and Vivitar.

First thing to note is that on a Pentax mount it works in aperture priority (Av) mode, so you can set the aperture with the camera dial (you can on my K5 anyway). This is handy as the aperture dial itself is tricky to get to as its very small and recessed. The focus method is manual on these, but it is very smooth and not at all lose, so you are confident the barrel stays where it was put. Additionally I get focus confirmation in the viewfinder with this lens which is useful (the little red dot confirming the subject is in focus).

The picture quality is simply stunning, and the bokeh is to die for - many call this lens the bokeh monster. Simply go and flickr to see what I mean. It does take a little getting used to, as at 1.4 the depth of field is tiny, but once you do it's a joy. All of my best portraits have been taken with this lens. It also gives amazing quality feel to video, as the same narrow depth of field is transferred to the video format. I found I could change the aperture whilst the video was shooting too.

Simply amazing value for money, you would spend 3 times for a pentax version, which is marginally better, but no where near 3 x times better. Buy one, you will not regret it!

Every time I use this lens the results leave me speechless. There is a misterious mix of sharpness and softness to the images with loads of details and beautiful, deep colours which gives 3D and a sort of silkiness feel to the objects. I have also been using 3 Nikon lenses but this Samyang blows them all away making them redundant. The main advantages over other lenses:
-sharpness
-colour
-lack of distortion
-lack of chromatic aberration
-bokeh smoothness
-fun to use due to MF only :)
-low price

Considering these, this lens is unbeatable and highly recommended.

I researched this lens before buying it - scoured the net, trawled forums and then took the plunge. Awesome bokeh and razor sharp. Fabulous image quality.

If you can manual focus your lens, this is a no brainer. Just get it. Bang for buck there's not much better. You won't regret it. It's the chipped version, so will meter with the body of most Nikon dslr's. There is also a focus assist green light, with rangefinder option on newer dslr's. Focussing at f1.4 With the narrow depth of field can be tricky but rewarding!

If you can't manual focus, think twice. Then learn how! Or look at the AF compatible lenses.

Build quality is great, although a nikon lens cap would be better! Lovely focussing ring, also comes with plastic hood and cheap carrying case.

Only negatives: lens cap a bit flimsy; No AF (but hence the price!)
