The kit is minimalist in terms of instructions - I guess the company has taken inspiration from Apple - but it works as everything is pretty much self explanatory. The only downside is that I wish I had a second so that we could have raced the cars against each other! I guess there is always Christmas :)
Now I must admit I was a bit worried, since it's a considerable purchase, and I wondered how easy it was it all going to be for him to use.
What convinced me in the end was seeing some videos of the graphical interface. My cousin is very smart but dyslexic, and knows little English, so I thought that was going to make it that much more intuitive for him.
And that proved to be very true.
The instructions are tiny, because all you need to do is install the Sam Labs software on your computer, then turn on each individual block, and they will all automagically appear on the screen. Drag and drop links between the pieces and voilà! The motor starts moving, much to my cousins amazement.
And then you start exploring. Or in our case, my cousin starts exploring. Really the great thing is that you can't do no wrong. As you connect your sensors to your actuators (in this kit a motor and a buzzer) you can see what happens and what doesn't happen. Since the software allows interactions with other things, such as sending a tweet, taking a picture via the computer camera, playing a sound via the computer, or indeed taking input from the computer, you can start making crazier stuff.
In that sense, it's just like Lego on steroids.
And just like Lego, I think this becomes better and better the more pieces you add to it. We did a simple RC car, that can go faster or slower depending on light intensity. But now my cousin want me to buy a couple of more blocks to make it possible to steer the car!
Secondly, the instructions for the projects are really basic. If it doesn't work as described, it's not obvious what to do next. This last comment is anecdotal but my grandson is very good technically so if he can't navigate the site, then the site isn't good enough.
I have also just found out that the app for iPhone and iPad is a limited version compared to the one for a laptop or computer. I don't think this is acceptable.
First of all, receiving the kit felt like opening something from Apple. The packaging is minimalist yet very sophisticated, it slides beautifully to reveal the SAMs inside.
Then the interface and exercises were a pleasure to do together. We created little morse code circuit, and the kids can now communicate without me or my wife understanding! and also a drum machine from things in the house, which was fun!
The activities are really well curated and the material is helpful.
Lots of fun, definitely recommend!
Highly recommended for any kid who loves to understand how things work, any adult who is interested by internet-of-things (IoT), coding, programming or rapid-prototyping, in essence, a modern day equivalent to the age-old Lego kit.
