Be warned that this is exactly what it says in the title. Ruth buys a Christmas tree; discusses pagan and early Christian Christmas customs with her friend, Cathbad the druid; buys presents; exchanges chilly Christmas good-wishes with her parents; agonises about her relationship with Max, the American professor who never quite measures up to her one-time lover, Harry; attends an awkward Christmas party at her friend Shona’s (all parties that she attends at Shona’s are awkward – it seems to be obligatory for this series). In short, if you were expecting any kind of mystery – there isn’t one (apart from a brief diversion regarding a missing piece of wood).
That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth reading – if you’re a fan of this series, then it’s a nice little warm dip into the lives of the regular characters. The last half the download actually consists of the opening chapters of the (then) next book, Dying Fall. I’ve already read this title, but I did enjoy it, so I would recommend you download this short and try a sample.

Written by Elly Griffiths, this is one of a series of Dr. Ruth Galloway (a forensic archaeologist) Mysteries.

It does involve the purchase of a christmas tree for Ruth's daughter Kate from a couple of car park sellers called Leaf and Raindrop (also called Rainbow a little later in the story) who have a strong affinity to nature and for whom 'time has no meaning' (but Leaf points out that they close at 5).

That was a decent joke in my opinion, but there are not many of those.

It's an easy story to read, and with plenty of interesting connections which hint at a very juicy mystery to come.
But the mystery itself is very weak and relatively unexplained.

I feel pretty smug, owning a kindle gave me the extra snippet of story that friends without kindles have missed! My only disappointment was that I got to 50% of this short story (which I saved up for the appropriate point between books) and it ends, as the next 50% was the opening pages of the next book (not a bad thing, just felt a bit abrupt ending when I was halfway through).
I really liked the tale and highly recommend it to Elly Griffiths fans. A must have :)

A very sweet tale; appreciated more because having read several Ruth Galloway stories the characters & circumstances were familiar.

A delightful very short story, most of which reiterates much of Ruth's previous life which is disappointing .
Then blow me 2chapters of another of Elly`s books!
