I love this stuff - you can just about watch it dry, and it works fabulously well. Edges on MDF will need two coats, and do take a bit longer to dry than the face of the board, but that's like 10 minutes rather than two. It has no discernable odour, and as it's so thin you can wipe it on, brush it or spray it (great with HVLP) straight out the tin. Coverage is great as well. Fab.

When I opened the can, I was very worried about how runny this was and thought that maybe it was a faulty batch :-/ So I posted a question on the product page and sent emails to the seller and Rustins, expressing my concern that it was so runny and that I thought it would make the surface of the MDF expand (which is what happened when I used a PVA + water primer on my last project). I think this MDF sealer may have worked better than the PVA + water primer precisely BECAUSE it was so runny, which meant it dried really quickly, before it could make the MDF swell....?

But everyone assured me that it was fine and the seller suggested I could try it on an off-cut or an inconspicuous piece first. So I did - and as it seemed fine, I applied it to the large surface - and they were all right because it WAS fine :-) I gave the surface two coats of MDF sealer and then proceeded to paint it with a water-based, white Satin paint that you'd use for doors and skirting boards etc.. I have given it 3 coats of Satin paint so far but it needs a 4th coat to look as near to perfect as possible.

So if anyone else is wondering if this works - the answer is a definitive YES!

A very thin paint which was easily absorbed by the MDF. It dried quickly and left behind a coating that would take primer/undercoat paint. The MDF was darkened slightly. Brushes washed out easily.

I applied two coats of the Rustin's sealer because I had far too much for my project - I bought the smallest size on offer - and I doubt that I will use it again in the foreseeable future. I anticipate that the primer/undercoat layers to be applied more easily than to bare MDF, and that the coverage will be greater and that the risk of patches will be much less. I will definitely use this type of product in the future when I need to paint MDF.

My only gripe with this purchase was the time taken to deliver the product to me. My fault, because the supplier, Plumbing Supermarket, stated that it would take up to 14 days to arrive, which was correct. But the project had to stand waiting for the delivery. Normally I would have got this type of product from Travis Perkins or Screwfix, but I had a few other items to buy from Amazon so I added this sealer to the order. Note to self - read the delivery dates before making an order!

Very thin so does not streak when you apply it and you can see where it has been applied
I have been using it on lazer cut mdf it requires a bit of 'working in' where cut but does the job
I have found i need 2 coats but they dry quickly and there is no odour so can be used inside
Size is great and will last for ages

I purchased a piece of MDF which I wanted to use as an equipment stand for a record player.

Perfect funtionality but a bit ugly from an aesthetic point of view. MDF sealers, I learned, are a very specialised paint and I was unable to find any in the big DIY chain in my town. I saw a 1 litre tin of Rustin MDF sealer in my local timber merchant and was told that it is not available in smaller tins. At £12.50 for quite a small job, knowing that I would only ever use a tiny fraction of the sealer, I was about to give up.

You can imagine I was deligted to discover that there ARE smaller tins. The sealer does go a very long way - I've hardly used any of it to start my project. It dries very quickly and even after the application of sealer, the ordinary piece of MDF was starting to look more pretty. It dries clear so that you can apply varnish as well as paint. I have used an oil based black paint and it is looking pretty good.

I am very pleased with this purchase.

As a new master of D.I.Y. I have found this product a boon, knocked up a shoe storage for the better half in a flash. One coat of this and ready to paint. Sweet.

Excellent product. I have increasingly used MDF for quite a few construction jobs around the house, and sealing the surface, and especially the edges has always posed a problem. I have tried a number of other products in the past, but I find Rustin's sealer to be superior to any other. Yes, it is not the cheapest, but you generally get what you pay for I find. If you purchase this product, you will not be disappointed. Recommended.
