5.0 out of 5 stars A Deep Insight into a Complicated Period 14 Mar. 2011
By Shelia B. Cassidy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
D C B Lieven has a grasp of Czarist history that is unequaled in modern historical writers. After reading his latest effort, "Russia Against Napoleon", I had to go back and find his earlier books. Some are already a rarity, but I purchased them anyway, partly because of his extensive research efforts into previously unavailable archives. Many times historians make a period too simple and fail to grasp the nuances and the competing influences on the rulers of the time. Dominic Lieven is one of the rare historians of the Czarist period who is capable of shedding the Western biases in search of deeper truths. This may be partly because of his knowledge of the Russian Language and also because his fore-bearers were Baltic Germans who had served in the institutions of Czarist Russia. This particular book is remarkable for the insight into the men who sought to influence Nicholas II into seeing things their way. It also reveals the last Czar to be conflicted in his own right and feeling a weight of responsibility for the country that he was unable to delegate to anyone else, thus ultimately bringing down the dynasty. The narrative is very easy to read and well worth the time for those who thought that times then were any less complicated than they are now. It is truly an eye opener.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impeccable scholarship explaining how Russia was governed in Tsarist times 4 July 2015
By Alan Salazar - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I have not encountered a better English writer of Russian History than Dominic Lieven. His scholarship is impeccable and reading his work is like traveling back in time and living among the people he writes about. This book details the lives of the Russian Imperial Court and the statesmen and villains who occupied it at the end of the 19th and start of the 20th Century. Mr. Lieven explains how the old bureaucracy worked in Tsarist times, how power was distributed, abused and the political and social currents at work before the Old Regime came undone.
