Product Description

Product Description

This 3disc collection showcases Russian piano trios from the midnineteenth to earlytwentieth centuries. Piano trios were unheard of for Russian composers until Mikhail Glinka wrote one in 1832; it earned the epithet Pathétique as it seemed to be a reflection of Glinkas general sadness at the time of writing, the piece alternating between caustic tension and attempts at lighthearted optimism. A mournful, melancholic influence then became characteristic of the Russian piano trio: Tchaikovsky unknowingly created a tradition when he composed his offering in 1882 one of his greatest chamber works and which he dedicated to his recently deceased and muchmissed friend Nikolay Rubinstein. On several subsequent occasions, piano trios were written as memorials. The collection also includes the mathematicallygoverned trio of Sergey Taneyev, who had gained a reputation as a cerebral composer, and the trio of Rimsky Korsakov, whose mastery of opera and vocal writing can be seen in the final movement as each instrument takes on its own voice and emotion thus resembling an interaction between characters. Alexander Borodin used the Classical model for his trio, although it contains surprising chromaticism as well as dramatic changes of temperament, including the tragic hymn in the second movement. Anton Arenskys take on the genre completes the collection. The Moscow Piano Trio was formed in 1976 and has achieved huge success in international competitions, notably winning the Maurice Ravel Gold Medal at the Bordeaux Mai Musical. The trio is comprised of pianist Alexander Bonduriansky, violinist Vladimir Ivanov and cellist Mikhail Utkin.

HASH(0x9877b36c) out of 5 stars Superb Performances of Some Not-So-Well-Known Gems, at an Amazingly Low Price 30 July 2013
By J Scott Morrison - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I'd like to add my praise for this 3 CD set already expressed by an earlier reviewer. Brilliant Classics is renowned for its releases of excellent music in excellent performances for super-budget prices and this one is among the best of these. Not only do we get some reasonably familiar works -- the Tchaikovsky and the Arensky trios -- but works I'd never heard (or in some cases even heard of) by Glinka, Taneyev, Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin. You'll have to admit that these composers are all at the heart of great 19th-century Russian music. And they all knew what they were doing. Perhaps the Glinka's Trio, the earliest of the lot, is a little rickety, but the other pieces are definitely worth hearing again and again.

As for the performances, the Moscow Trio was uniquely qualified to play these uniquely Russian works. All three of them have been professors at the Moscow Conservatory and have played to acclaim all over Europe. The recordings were made in the early 1990s. The sound is all one could ask for. These are treasurable performances.

HASH(0x9ab6bfc0) out of 5 stars My 2 cents worth and $4 will buy you a cup of coffee... 8 Oct. 2015

Not an expert on this type of music. Was just looking for something a little different. I liked this a lot the first time I listened to it, and that rarely happens. It usually takes a few listens of any music before I develop an appreciation. These are very good performances. Can actually sense passion in the playing.

HASH(0x9af90a80) out of 5 stars You're blowing it, AMAZON - list the COMPOSERS! 12 Mar. 2014
By A. K. Moore - Published on Amazon.com
I'm rating this 5 stars to match the others - I haven't heard it but I don't want my rant against amazon's terrible marketing to unfairly impact perceptions of the recordings themselves, which are not to blame. Amazon: you claim to be the world's most consumer-centric company and in many ways you are, but we - thousands of us - have been telling you for years how broken your site is for classical MP3s. Most important, you list the artist as the performer, leaving out the COMPOSER, so we know that it's a Piano Trio in Dmi but we don't know by WHOM! What works for rock & roll does NOT work for classical, where titles are so often generic and the composer is almost never the performer. With all your billions, and your stated goal of being consumer friendly, you should be able to fix this after knowing about it for so many years. Additionally, your MP3 ID-tagging is very sub-standard. The MP3s sound good enough (it would be better if they were 320k/sec) but the ID tagging is considerably worse than what you can get when you use a freeware CD-ripping program. Please, amazon, have some decency and pride and fix your website and MP3s.
