Product description

Product Description

International version of his third album features three additional tracks (17 total) plus seven tracks that are not on the US version, 'That's Amore', 'Ave Maria', 'Questa O Quella', 'Nothing Sacred, 'Pourquoi Me Reveiller', 'I Don't Know How I Got By' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. The US edition has four tracks that are not on here. It began with 'The Voice'... It was followed by 'Encore'... now, Russell Watson returns with his stunning third album 'Reprise'. Effortlessly gliding through his trademark assortment of operatic arias and popular ballads, Russell's fantastic voice just seems to get stronger and stronger. The many highlights include a powerful version of Bizet's 'Pearl-Fishers' duet, Schubert's 'Ave Maria' and a wonderful arrangement of Dean Martin's 'That's Amore'. 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and Mike And the Mechanics hit 'Living Years' round off what is without doubt his most polished album to date. Universal. 2002.

On Reprise, his third album, Russell Watson continues to bring together classical pieces with light songs--have Bizet and "Bohemian Rhapsody" ever shared a disc before? Probably not, and with good reason--it's rather unsettling to hear Leoncavallo's devestating "Vesti la giubba" (from Pagliacci) tagged on after a dreary rendition of the aforementioned Queen hit.

He may have been dubbed "the people's tenor", but Watson is at his best--and most comfortable--at the lighter end of the repertory. He sings the lilting "That's Amore" with charm and humour, a smooth performance which compares to Robbie Williams on Swing When You're Winning.

Nicholas Dodd's swooning orchestrations give Reprise a grandiose feel. Sadly, Watson's voice cannot match their intensity; his version of the famous duet from The Pearl Fishers (yes, he sings both parts) sounds strangled and his performance of "Core 'ngrato" is distinctly unmemorable.

Watson is credited as Reprise's producer. If he maintains that role on album number four, he should concentrate on the light songs and ballads, which he performs so well, in this instance not just "That's Amore" but also "The Living Years", "I don't know how I got by" and "The best that love can be". --Rebecca Agnew
