I had the Panasonic SD255 machine before but it died just out of guarantee and have been without a machine for many months. On a whim I thought I would check out the prices but decided the Panasonic was far to expensive so I bought this cheaper one.
The Russell Hobbs is much more compact and indeed will fit under the kitchen wall cupboards with the lid lifted, a bonus as I have wall cupboards over all my work spaces.
With the viewing window I can monitor the dough right from the start, so if I need to add that drop of water or bit of flour I can have it ready to drop in very quickly as soon as the lid is lifted.
This machine is capable of making jam and cakes it also has a keep warm function the Panasonic had none of these.
I have also noticed that when the machine is switched on it immediately goes into action mixing the ingredients - no sitting about. (obviously would hang about if timer is used). A superb loaf of bread in 3hours and 20minutes instead of 4hours that the Panasonic took.
Some reviewers have mentioned that the machine is noisy, mine is, but I put that down to the dough getting a thorough pounding rather than going round and round stuck to the paddle doing very little.
A lovely machine, compact and easy to operate, easy to clean. I'm looking forward to making many fresh and tasty loaves of bread.
The positives, in my view, are the reasonable size of the loaf and the consistency (once you tweak the recipe according to your type of flour etc.).
a) as others have said, the way the machine jumps around when mixing - we now use a non-slip mat to avoid it falling off the worktop;
b) the rather non- non-stick paddle which always has a lump of the loaf stuck to it when taken out;
c) the haphazard mixing which can send flour and dough out of the pan - we now have a burn mark on the machine where a lump of dough wedged next to the heating element.
But we've used it for a year without major problems, so three stars seems appropriate.
After a couple of false starts - my fault I would say - my bread is great.
I now prefer it to the Panasonic. If you forget something you can lift the lid and throw it in!! Fantastic, on my second go I had forgotten to replace the paddle - only discovered this after 30 mins when the kneading should have started and there was silence. I switched off the machine at the wall, replaced the paddle and switched it on again. There is a cut off period built into the machine incase of power cut so I thought it might work - it did.
I read the booklet thoroughly and it really helped. I prefer the pale crust as it is lovely when toasted. I would also follow the recipe by using olive oil - when I have used butter the bread is heavier and slightly sticky. They have done their research, the half and half wholemeal recipe works - don't try putting in all wholemeal. Love the viewing window in lid and the beeper when ready is nice and loud. Cannot fault this machine. I think it is amazing value for money. Would highly recommend it.
I therefore assume that the more recent models of this machine have low quality/power motors and have decided to try another brand.
