Manufacturer's Description

Russell Hobbs 9702 Coffee Grinder

Russell Hobbs have introduced an electric Coffee Grinder to complement their stylish Classic range of kitchen electrics. For people who enjoy the taste of real coffee, the Coffee Grinder is a functional part of the coffee making process but the new Russell Hobbs version provides additional features to help the right kind of coffee to suit your machine.

The Russell Hobbs Classic Coffee Grinder is compact and will grind any variety of coffee bean for coffee making purposes, and includes a unique timing facility which selects the correct milling time for whatever quantity of coffee is required. This works by using a cup selector switch which activates the timer and selects the correct milling time for 4-12 cups of coffee. The operating switch is simply pressed for a short time until the neon light indicates when the coffee is correctly ground: coarse, medium or fine. Other features include a safety system to avoid operating the coffee grinder without the lid being correctly in place. A fitted plug is also provided.

Discovered the wonder of freshly ground coffee in a morning after buyingthis. My only niggle is the poor seal between cup and grinder so if youaren't pressing down quite hard the work surface is sprayed with finelyground coffee. Overall, though, a nice and compact coffee grinder, whichwas worth the money paid for it.

It does the job well and is a compact machine that takes up little space in the kitchen. Can grind beans to coarse, medium and fine grain so is ideal for grinding beans for all coffee machines. Also has a switch allowing you to set the number of cups you are grinding for. However, I have not found out exactly what impact using this switch has on grinding the beans. That said, it does the job well and effortlessly.

I drink filtered coffee every day and require the grind to be very fine. I've had my grinder about four years, using it about twice a week. It is compact (stands on the counter) and has until recently been reliable. I'm buying another one because the plastic button which controls the switch broke and fell off. I've held it on with an elastic band but the machine is no longer reliable. I'm buying the same model because I don't see anything on the market that so suits my purposes at a reasonable price. In particular, I like the fact that I and not the machine control the fineness of the grind. The lights on the side inform as to when one reaches the "Coarse-Medium-Fine" stages but I usually ignore them as I like my coffee to be very fine for maximum flavour.
I suspect that the problem switch (also mentioned by other reviewers) hasn't been strengthened since I bought it, but I will try to be more gentle with the new one!

Well it was a fairly good grinder for the 1st 12 months, albeit a little difficult to clean effectively below the blades.

However, the button gradually lifted away from the case and became very temperamental.

Finally, though, it was the cable that got me. It simply became very weak and worn through at the join to the case and eventually one of the wires became detached.

Rather than attempt to repair it myself and live with the button that sometimes worked and sometimes didn't I junked it. Now, I'm looking for a new one...
