Once assembled, you fix a cloth onto the head using the drawstring. Then simply add water to the tank using the well-designed filter jug which should prevent limescale damage. It really does take less than 30 seconds to heat up and start producing steam, and off you go. The results seem good to me, with a very clean-looking kitchen and bathroom floor. I'm less convinced by the results on carpet, but it does improve things and I may persevere. The swivel-head makes it easy to manoeuvre and it gets into the corners pretty well because of the shape of the head. The cloth is easy to machine wash on 40 degrees.
Some things aren't so great. I found it very hard work on any textured floor (like stone). The cloth was inclined to come off occasionally, even with the string drawn very tight. The cable hook at the top swings loose as you wind the cable onto it and dumps it off if you're not careful, and the plug ends up in a very awkward position when the cable is wound on - small things, but annoyances nonetheless and they should have been put right at the prototype stage.
However, the good points outweigh the bad by a considerable margin and if you need a small, light steam mop for smooth, sealed floors, this will do you pretty well, I think. Russell Hobbs have a good reputation for quality and durability and I expect this to last well, so I can recommend it.
They both have good cleaning features & I am a steam mop convert!
So how does this slightly smaller one compare.
This was so easy to put together and to set up and use. There are 2 mop cloths provided 1 to use and 1 to wash.
I used it on - Quarry tiles in my kitchen - these were cleaned very quickly and moreover the floor was dry very quickly - minutes later.
I used it on - Vinyl floor in the bathroom - this is quite a large surface - a large bathroom with lots of corners - and once again dry very quickly. The swivel part of the mop head was good in this awkward shaped room.
I used it on - a pale rug - the carpet glide is to easy to put on - NO CLIPS or fiddly bits when using the machine. It certainly freshened up the rug - I think it is best to vacuum first as clumps of hairs etc are brought together on the surface. Once again dry very quickly.
With this one you have to filter the water first & then add this water to fixed water tank. I thought this might be a problem but it is very easy to do.
This one has a permanent ON button which is switched off which makes it slightly easier to use than the larger model which has a trigger which has to be HELD ON all the time.
This one is only a little bit lighter to carry which might make a difference to some people - but neither are as heavy as my vacuum cleaner.
With both mops you have to be aware that although the power cord is fairly long, in many situations it might not be long enough, depends on where your electricity sockets are.
However on this mop the cord is too long for the hook that it is meant to wrap around which is a nuisance when you come to store it - hence 4.5 to 4 stars.
On the down side, the cleaning area is quite small and I personally find triangular headed cleaners a pain. You get much better, faster coverage from rectangular ones. Also the water tank is very cheap and a bit on the small side. It's not removable, so you have to tip the unit upside down to drain if you don't want to store it with water in. I'm not a fan of the cheap stopper used for the water tank either.
The steam mop works perfectly well, but for me the triangular head just isn't big enough to do anywhere other than small clean-ups, rather than a big spring clean.
Practically, and also from a psychological perspective, this is far easier to use than a standard steam cleaner, because of its lightness and ease of use. The carpet glider is also a great addition. I do actually like this product per se, but however, there are two major caveats here.
For this appliance, the anti-calc filter must be replaced. The instructions state that in soft water, this will last for 100 uses. How many people are in soft water areas? This will undoubtedly radically reduce the efficiency for hard water consumers, and I feel that this is an appliance, like a vacumn cleaner, that will be used everyday. Also, the cloths supplied, (two with the appliance), won't last for ever, so what is the cost of replacement?
For me this is the ultimate key to purchase. Looking on the website for Russell Hobbs, as indicated in the instructions, [...] there is nothing about being able to buy these replacements, (cloths and anti-scale cartridge). My gut feeling is that the relative inexpensiveness of this product will be outweighed by the expense of replacement items. This market is competitive, so I can't recommend this product, purely because of potential long term costs for replacements. I suppose, in many ways, if money is not object, then it could get a 5 star, but most of us need to look after the pennies.
