In the end it all came down to
1) how balanced the kettle was when you picked it up, did it feel good in the hand
2) did it boil quickly (using the Which? guide of 2.5-3 minutes for a litre of water being quick)
3) did it turn off quickly after boiling (3-5 seconds).
And the answer to all of these for this kettle is...excellent, yes and yes.
Another good thing I find is that with other kettles you have to open the lid yourself, with this one it's so much more intuitive, just depress the button on the handle with your thumb and it pops open. In some situations, like filling it from a water filter it doesn't open quite far enough but it's easy enough to pull it open a touch more.
A great little kettle, and well worth the extra £10 over a Tesco cheapy.
Great value for money would highly recommend.
It seemed a very good deal when we bought it for £15, mid December 2012. After receiving it, I immediately went to order another, only to find the price had already doubled, so decided against it.
It is much quieter than its predecessor, but that one didn't seem to last particularly well, so wondered if this one would last any better.
Later bought another for just under £20 when it was available, which seemed quite good value at that price.
Since then the first one just stopped working and blew the contact breaker after only 7 weeks of normal use. Amazon would not respond to my communications on this to provide a replacement or refund.
So if you want one, don't buy it from Amazon, as they won't honour their obligations under the trades descriptions act, to replace faulty goods that are not fit for purpose. I have, anyway, seen them in the shops for less than £20, and at least you can take it back to them if it stops working after 7 weeks.

Have since written to Russell Hobbs giving purchase details and, after a while, they agreed to replace it free of charge. This model was no longer available, so have just received a model 20070, Cambridge in brushed stainless steel as a replacement. It is a different shape and has a removable, rather than hinged, lid, but that doesn't matter to me.
