Professor Mingay book fills a void when it comes to Victorian England. I can't offhand remember any other well defined work that covers the rural community and society.
While this book is geared up as a textbook there are ample photographs to show what life was like then. Also the way the work was put together in defined chapters, each devoted to a set segment of the rural community (i.e. The Landowners, The Farmers, Industrial Workers in the Countryside etc) means that one can head to what one is interested in instead of ploughing through the whole book.
Leading on from this there is a good index as well as an excellent section on references and a select bibliography.
As for the book itself Mingay puts up some good arguments in relation to the changes that took place in the rural community as it relates to the community as a whole.
Again it is a good reference resource for the agricultural historian while more socially based that agricultural based would not be a out of place on the bookshelf.

Although I have not read the complete book yet, it seems to describe
life in the period very accurately, and because each chapter covers
different aspects and areas of society, this makes it easier to read and understand.
