Product description

About the Author

Born and bred in the sunny seaside town of Brighton, one of the first literary conundrums Shani had to deal with was her own name - Shani can be pronounced in a variety of ways but in this instance it's Shay-nee not Shar-ney or Shan-ni - although she does indeed know a Shanni - just to confuse matters further! Hobbies include reading, writing, eating and drinking - all four of which keep her busy enough. After graduating from Sussex University with a degree in English and American Literature, Shani became a freelance copywriter. Twenty years later, the day job includes crafting novels as well as copywriting. Debut novel The Runaway Year - a contemporary ensemble romance set between Brighton and North Cornwall - launched in July 2013. There is a sequel in the pipeline as well as a paranormal mystery - coming soon.

Well written and proof read as are all Shani 's books. Good amount of emotions, nice characterisation. Ready to read the next in the series.

If you enjoy 'Chick Lit' then this has to rate as a superb example of the genre. It has all the key elements, feisty, likeable yet flawed (so therefore totally believable) characters; Romance, heartbreak, misunderstandings, vacillations, reconciliations, compelling locations, suspense, hangovers,...all wrapped up in a cracking good page turner...leaving you wanting to hear more about Layla, Joseph et al. I hope there's a sequel Ms Struthers!Highly recommended.

Shani, I freakin love you for writing this book….Even though you made me cry (more than once might i add).

So the story begins with Layla, All loved up with her boss, Alex (Yes she went there, stupid, STUPID girl) until he breaks her heart by taking new office girl, Sarah Jane, away. Left with only a post-it note for an explanation and a very red face she decides she can’t cope with life in Brightion anymore so runs away to her childhood holiday place, Trecastle, Where her childhood friend, Hannah, lives.
Life in Trecastle is much more laid back than Brighton and she soon forgets all about Brighton but her feelings for the rat bag Alex she can’t seem to turn off, even when presented with the local hottie, Joseph. Even though there is a spark between them Layla refuses to admit it, much to Joseph and my fustration! Will they or wont they? Will Alex come to Trecastle and beg forgivness? Will friendships survive certain secrets? So many questions and only the book has the answers

I LOVED this book, even though at times i wanted to scream at Layla! How could she still have feelings for that rat bag Alex?!?
The story was well plotted and i never got lost with where the story was going…. In fact i was up until 1.30am because i couldn’t put it down!
The characters were very believable, if fact I could probably name at least one of my friends after each one!
Layla ~ Like everyone, has her ups and downs in life and never seems to have her foot out of her mouth, for the love of god woman…… Keep your mouth shut! And her temper O.M.G!
Penny ~ My word I love this woman! Say it how it is girl Out spoken and a VERY friendly flirt.
Hannah ~ The quite-ish one with secrets and kinda got on my nerves at times.
Joseph ~ WOW!

Following the relationship ups-and-downs of Layla, Penny, and Hannah, The Runaway Year is a satisfying blend of comedy, romance, drama and friendship. The characters are sufficiently plentiful (and complicated) that there is never a dull moment, some making me laugh, others bringing me near to tears.

I particularly like the way the author weaves the special beauty and charm of Cornwall into the practical and messy lives of the three women. The rugged cliffs and secret caves offer a great backdrop - I'm feeling in need of a trip back to Cornwall!

Hoping the next book isn't too far away...

If you can't afford a vacation this year then run away with Shani Struther's debut novel to Cornwall. All the elements of a wonderful holiday are there: the beach, quaint Cornish fishing village a la Doc Martin, the friendly pub and an idyllic cottage overlooking Gull Rock. You can have as many Cornish cream teas as you like and not put on an ounce. What more would you like? Hunky guys - plenty of those, too; good mates on tap to pass the tissues or pour out the pinot grigio; not to mention a hero to fall in love with and one seriously scary arachnid. Arachnid? Read the novel and you'll find out. Top it all off with an eccentric' bolter' of a mother and a `love rat', AKA Alex and you've got the elements of a great summer read, on the beach or on your sofa.
I empathised with plucky Layla, fell in love with Joe (and Jim) and wanted to spend a stormy winter night in the pub listening to Jim's band. Hannah was a complete doll, but as for Penny - well, I'd say she was an acquired taste who redeemed herself in the end. In all, a most satisfying read and I'm already looking forward to Ms Struthers next novel. How about Christmas in Trecastle?

I really enjoyed spending a year in Trecastle and getting to know Layla, Penny and Hannah. Layla, having left her life and ex-boyfriend/boss, Alex, behind her to spend a year in the gorgeous Cornish village looking after a cottage and getting to know, then falling out with her lovely neighbour, Joseph - I loved Joseph! Penny with her marital problems due to her getting a little too close to Dylan and then admitting it to her workaholic, husband Richard - I have to admit I wasn't sure about Penny at first. Then there was the lovely Hannah, whose boyfriend Jim plays in a band and is very much in love with her. Each has their relationship issues and past hurts. If there was any criticism I could make about this book, it would be that I'd have loved to spend longer with each character, however this was a perfect book to read either lying on a beach in the summer, or in front of a log fire in the winter. Loved it.

I have just read The Runaway Year by Shani Struthers on a beautiful Antiguan beach!
From the very first page I was totally captured by the story and found each page involving me personally in what I believe to be the best holiday read I have enjoyed for years!! The characters are totally believable and the autor's descriptions of the Cornish countryside and coastline are breathtaking!
I even found myself falling a little in love with Joseph but I wont spoil it for you...just hurry up and read it yourself to fall into his web too!!
An excellent read and I shall be holding my breath until Shani Struther's next book appears!!
