When I read the publisher's blurb `Best serial since Dickens', I had reservations. Yet reading the novel complete I must agree this story contains those same elements that made Dickens so popular. Originally an ebook serial(I first read a couple of digital episodes), Maggie's adventures surge neatly into a bound book. And unlike Dickens there are passages not suitable for children even though the heroine is nine years old! About to be hanged for murder, she makes a perilous escape, and thus begins little Maggie's odyssey to womanhood. On the run, a series of adventures takes her to the far end of the world. She outsmarts Arab pirates, endures kidnapping, survives sex predators and is sold as a slave, only to find herself a bonded servant amid English gentry. They are sailing to create an Eden for themselves in the wilderness. Here, Maggie disrupts the founding ceremony. Thrills, humour and compassion blend to give this novel my five-star rating. This is story telling at its best.
