Seminal mid eighties celtic punk from the Pogue mahones. Contains some of the bands finest songs such as The sick bed of Cuchulainn and the old main Drag. Mc Gowans voice is intact. The band has progressed from Red Roses and it was before the whole world got on board. Every song is a ripper from Billy's Bones to Navigator to A man you don't meet everyday. The crowd favourites of Dirty old town and Sallymaclennane are also there. There's something for everyone. I can't help but think they were at their peak. Personally I recall playing it endlessly in Mc Dermotts pub in Swinford between85 and 87. Watching Shane and the band performing The Sick Bed on the Late Late show singing about Frank Ryan and syphilis and spewing up in the church! It was a fantastic antidote to the mid 80's gloom and me and my mates loved it. Within a year or two we were all over in London where amongst other things I ended up a barman and met a man who reckoned Shane wrote A pair of Brown Eyes for. Rip Mo.An essential purchase!

What can one say that hasn't been said before? The Pogues (with Shane McGowan) have created a trademark blend of raucous Irish punk rock and poetry. The music and words come from the heart and stir the soul; the band performs with a simple ferocity that belies the deep and complex emotions behind the words. Yet it's not just Emerald Isle Ramones. The Pogues know how to do slow numbers too - full of wit, cynicism and anger. My favourite tracks on this album (with 6 bonus tracks) are Rainy Night in Soho, Sick Bed of Cuchulainn, Old Main Drag, A Pair of Brown Eyes, Sally MacLennane and The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. But there isn't a single bad track on the album although some tracks are definitely better than others. For me, Jesse James and London Girl are not the Pogues quite at their best though they're catchy and good fun. Overall, strongly recommended. A masterpiece.(Make sure you buy the digitally remastered version with the 6 bonus tracks that are not present on the original album.)

Had the original English version on vinyl, but it got damaged. So took the opportunity to down load this expanded US version, needless to say I loved it then and loved it again. The Pogues mixture of Celtic punk and more traditional sounding songs and instrumentals certainly hits the spot for me. It has fast lively jigs and reels, pull no punches lyrics, from the tear it up Wild Cats of Kilkenny to the traditional old standard Dirty Old Town. It takes you on a journey from Jesse James wild west to the hauntingly sad thoughts of an Australian veteran of Gallipoli on Anzac day. All in all, a great album and the extra tracks on this version are just a bonus.
