I started reading this on the back of another book that was written only from the hero's POV. When I started this book the first 10 chapters were from the hero's POV and I just wasn't in the mood for that. Yes there was a nice mix of humour and angst, with some amusing internal dialogue, but Henrik doesn't always come across as all that well. He has his reasons for being an idiot, which are revealed fairly late on in the book. Hints are made about it but I felt too much was hidden from the reader and had we known more we would have understood and made a few more allowances.
Once I got to Morgana's chapters the book really picked up for me and I frequently found myself laughing and giggling out loud. I almost wish we had heard her voice earlier in a the book. I even found Henrik's chapters much more amusing and easier to read after this point. Both main characters were extremely quirky, as were many of the supporting characters, but I still found them charming and got caught up in hoping they would get their HEA.
Some (in fact probably many) of their actions and reactions were not 'normal' but felt it worked in that very Bridget Jones way of the main characters being just a little odd and eccentric. If you enjoy a zany rom-com and you can let go of the 'I'm sure that wouldn't really happen' thoughts and just go with the flow, then you should enjoy what I found to be an entertaining, funny and very well written book.
I am not sure that I bonded with either of the main characters but their quick wit and randomness as to their internal dialogue and talking to inanimate objects is what kept me intrigued. As for Morgana and Henrik, I feel like they kept giving me whiplash. Their constant push and pull and random jumping around within themselves was enough to drive me insane. I love a good random story, so don’t get me wrong, what my problem is, is the fact that it wasn’t angsty but just annoying because they want to be together and Henrik will be an idiot to ruin it all and Morgana wouldn’t protest for a second as to taking him back.
I also felt a little lost in certain parts of the story and annoyed as to why I wasn't getting it. When asking myself if I would read this book again, the answer is a no and I will probably forget it quickly. Maybe it was just me and I wasn’t meshing with the book but only you will know if this book is for you or not!
I liked how Morgana Drake, went to work at Mimir as Henrik Paynes assistant. She wasn't afraid to challenge him. I also liked the instant attraction they had for each other. The chemistry between the two of them was hot and erotic.
This is the second book in The Cake Love series but can be read as a standalone. I look forward to reading more books by Elizabeth Lynx.
A Book Lover's Emporium
Morgana has given up on dating and is focusing on her career. Morgana is fun, flirty, clumsy and sexy with it. Morgana may have given up on dating but this hasn't stopped her and Payne; her boss; having a few less than work appropriate encounters, but after each one Payne pushes Morgana away. Morgana has no idea why but she takes revenge by wearing outfits that she knows will get under his skin!!
Morgana has been convinced into trying online dating and she has been chatting with one guy for a little why, they haven't swapped photo's and have no idea what the other one looks like until they decide to meet up. On the day of the meeting Morgana arrives to find...
Henrik Payne; Morgana's boss, comes across as quite the jerk! The way he treats Morgana had me hurling abuse at him several times(and cheering Morgana). But once I begun reading the parts from Payne's POV I begun to understand him a bit more, and eventually I found myself becoming quite fond of the guy!!
I'm glad Elizabeth gave me the opportunity to discover Morgana and Payne, I enjoyed getting to know them both. The swapping between their POV worked really well as I felt that I was getting to know both characters and was inside both their heads.
In such a short book the author has demonstrated her wonderful writing style, and her fantastic ability to develop the characters and to draw the reader into the plot.
Overall Rules of Payne is a great, quick, funny read.
If you're looking for a short well written, sexy, laugh out loud read then what are you waiting for? Grab yourself a copy of Rules of Payne!!!
(WARNING: there is a cliffhanger at the end)!!
