This is so sad as more and more children are suffering through ignorance.
Well done for having the courage to put pen to paper and tell your story, hopefully if just one person takes the time to speak their child and explain difference, it may just stop that child sitting alone and friendless
I would recommend this book.
It was sweet, gentle and honest.
What I loved was how much Alex did to take of her despite the guilt.
Some of the supporting characters came across as unfeeling and selfish.
I was surprised at her parents the most.
Beautiful and inspiring.
Maybell is a dancer. She's spent most of her life trying her best at dancing and with the encouragement of her parents she wants to be a full time dancer. She loves dancing but she also loves other things like writing and playing video games. She's never really fit in anywhere. She only has one friend who doesn't really seem like a friend at all. All the others at school laugh and make fun of her. One night after an accident she encounters Alex. Like her he is also socially awkward and has no friends. He loves to draw and play video games. They're kinda kindred spirits and accept each other as they are. I don't want to say anymore about the plot so as to not spoil it.
Please don't get me wrong by what i'm about to say. I did like this book. I liked that it was about two people who were not the normal book couple. They weren't perfect but they were for each other. I thought the story-line was ok it ticked over and i didn't struggle to read it. But... I didn't love it. It didn't grab me. I'm not sure why but i just felt it was missing something. There was some drama in it, it wasn't boring or mundane i just didn't connect with it.
Maybell was sweet and determined i really liked that about her. Sometimes she felt like giving up but she didn't. Alex was cute and could be shy but i really liked it when he said what he felt unfiltered and Maybell brought that out in him. They had a good ending and it was nice to see them happy.
I did see the twist coming near the end but that didn't spoil it. I thought it was well written and i think with some parts being true it made the book better. The end word from the author is well worth reading to know which parts are true.
I would recommend this book and this authors fans will love it. It just fell a little flat for me.
This is not your normal story… no, it’s almost more like an autobiography…if I read in the introduction correctly it says, 'based on a true story'… after that, that’s ALL I can think while I read.
I couldn't quite manage to get deeply involved with Maybell. I mean, I empathised with her for her relationship with her parents and sympathised with her through her school years with being bullied for having Asperger’s. That was just awful to read and it made me feel for her! I liked the way Alexander was introduced into the story and that you got two points of view. It's nice to know what the man is thinking. Again, the issues that surround him made me feel.....sad. It was a good story that had feel good moments and an insight into how it feels to be dependent on people when you are unable to help yourself.
Maybell is a happy girl as a rule. Always smiling but very much a loner. Having Asperger’s makes it hard to make friends. Her parents don't seem interested in her life, other than to tell her what she should be doing. Her Mother seems to be living vicariously through her. There is an accident where Maybell is rescued by Alex who is a passerby and goes with her to the hospital. Alex happened to have had a crush on her since school but as their friendship grows it takes a toll on him. They have much in common but can their relationship work?
It's complicated... you'll have to read to find out.
