Product Description

Box set containing three popular comedies from acclaimed director Wes Anderson. 'The Royal Tenebaums' (2002) is an Oscar-nominated comedy about an oddball New York family of former child geniuses. Before their marriage floundered, Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) and his wife Etheline (Angelica Huston) succeeded in raising three prodigies: business supremo Chas (Ben Stiller), prize-winning playwright Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) and tennis champion Richie (Luke Wilson). Now, after years of separation, and with the children grown-up and the memory of their prodigy faded, Royal returns to his family and tries to make amends. However, with Royal's history of lies and betrayal, his offspring - who all now have problems of their own - are going to have trouble welcoming him back. 'Rushmore' (1999) stars Jason Schwartzman as Max Fischer, a 10th grade pupil at Rushmore Academy. When not daydreaming, Max pours all of his energy into his beloved extra-curricular activities, often to the neglect of his studies. His determination to make a name for himself is sent into overdrive by the arrival of pretty new teacher Miss Cross (Olivia Williams). Outside of school, Max is taken under the wing of middle-aged steel tycoon Herman Blume (Bill Murray), whose sons are boorish thugs. Things begin to go awry when Mr Blume falls for Miss Cross himself, and Max becomes unhinged with jealousy. His schemes to win the affections of his teacher grow ever more extreme, while his academic life threatens to collapse around him. Finally 'The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou' (2005) stars Bill Murray as internationally famous oceanographer Steve Zissou. Steve and his crew, Team Zissou, set sail on an expedition to hunt down the mysterious, elusive, possibly non-existant Jaguar Shark that killed Zissou's partner during the documentary filming of their last adventure. They are joined on their voyage by a young airline co-pilot who may or may not be Zissou's son (Owen Wilson), a beautiful journalist (Cate Blanchett) assigned to write a profile of Zissou, and Zissou's estranged wife and co-producer, Eleanor (Anjelica Huston). They face overwhelming complications including pirates, kidnapping, and bankruptcy.

As mentioned above, this collection contains Rushmore, Royal Tennenbaums, and the Life Aquatic.

If you have never seen any of these films, then you can't go far wrong with this collection. These are probably Wes Anderson's three most famous and highly regarded films, and they are all excellent. In particular I think the Life Aquatic is absolute genius, but everyone i know would probably pick a different favourite.

I would recommend, however, one film which is omitted is Anderson's first movie, Bottlerocket, which features many of the actors in these movies. It is, in my opinion, just as good as these, and if you enjoyed this collection then you should seek out Bottlerocket immediately.

These are films that will not appeal to everyone. I think they're brilliant and bought the collection having seen the Life Aquatic and the Royal Tenenbaums before. The collection is terrific value for money and if you're a Wes Anderson fan you'll already know what you're getting. If you're a first timer, I would perhaps recommend renting at least one of these films before to test the water, as they are definitely not to everyone's taste. They are all shot in docudrama format and are an interesting perspective on American lifestyle that would otherwise remain hidden to anyone outside the US. A great buy if you like to watch fly off the wall documentaries! I loved it.

You will either love these films or you just won't get them. A common event when dealing with surrealism or black comedy. If you want to be eased in gently, start with 'The life aquatic' as it's probably the most accessible. 'The Royal Tenenbaums' is easily in my top ten films of all time. 'Rushmore' whilst worth a watch and having some great moments isn't as good as the other two.

Watch these if you liked Dr.Strangelove, In Bruges or maybe Coen Brothers films.

Whilst 'Rushmore' may be one of the most original films of it's day that spawned a host of inferior imitations, and 'The Royal Tenenbaums' brings together a brilliant ensemble cast for a simultaneously funny and sad story, 'The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou' is just plain rubbish. If this box set had substituted that film for the much better 'Bottle Rocket' it would be a marked improvement and then contain the 3 films that Anderson co-wrote with Owen Wilson too, giving the box set more of a consistent theme.
