Product description

Product Description

Before they even hit a chord, The Royal Southern Brotherhood have your attention. In the US South, where music is religion, two rock 'n' roll bloodlines tower above all others. In the saloon bars from Mississippi to Maryland, mere mention of the Allman and Neville Brothers casts a magic spell. Conversation falls silent. Pool balls stop rolling. Ten-gallon hats are tipped in respect and beer-bottles raised in salute. These aren't just bands, they're gods, and with a lineup comprising both the iconic Cyril Neville and Devon Allman, The Royal Southern Brotherhood come pre-loaded with expectations. Don't worry: they can match them. The family tree might be auspicious, but this new band trades on talent, not genealogy. It's not about rock history: it's about the here-and-now. This lineup has talent to burn. You'll already know Cyril Neville: poet, philosopher, percussion master and perhaps the South's last great soul singer. Devon Allman. As the son of Gregg Allman, the 39-year-old has rock 'n' roll in his DNA, but he's always walked his own path. Mike Zito: the blues ace whose ear for melody provides the counterpoint to his wingman's rocking tendencies. Nominated in 2011 for the Blues Music Foundation's 'Best Blues Rock' award, and winner of 2010's Blues Music Award. Bassist Charlie Wooten and drummer Yonrico Scott: both heavyweight names in their own right, with Charlie's bass chops celebrated on the Southern jam scene for his sets with the Woods Brothers, and Yonrico hitting the skins for luminaries including the Derek Trucks Band, Gregg Allman and the Allman Brothers themselves. They said that rock 'n' roll was dead, but they were wrong. Right now, in 2012, there's something in the air, as The Royal Southern Brotherhood drag their thrilling new brand of blues-rock and white-hot musicianship from the Southern States onto the world stage. The South is rising again. Come along for the ride.

A colleague saw Royal Southern Brotherhood at a Festival recently and rated them highly. And he, like me, is a blues fan - so, intrigued, and without giving this any prior listening, I lashed out for a copy and now I cannot decide whether what my colleague heard was indeed what this CD purports to be!
When you look at the quality of the band members, then there is no question of pedigree, but this is no blues band. Neither is it a soul band. Neither is it a rock band - methinks it's actually struggling for an identity possibly resultant of that pedigree!
For me at least, the first six tracks are just a bit of a mish mash and completely fail to enthrall BUT, from track 7 to track 11 inclusive we are treated to a bucketful of good ol' southern rock, full of good guitar licks being traded and wonderful vocals. And track 12 "Brotherhood" is an attempt at a "Jessica", perhaps, intended as a live banner standard?
Certainly, they may well be a cracking band live, but on the evidence displayed here, I can only give it a 3* rating - give us an album of the quality of tracks 7-11 and the full 5* would not even need a second thought!

I downloaded this a few days ahead of going to see the band live. Whilst the album is fine I wouldn't say I was blown away. However, RSB live were awesome! In 30 years of going to gigs one of the best bands I have ever seen. Just fantastic performances.
The album is now a nice memento of what I saw live and if they can live up to their live standard next time they get in the studio I'll be blown away.

Royal Southern Brotherhood look set to become the latest sensation out of Ruf Records with the recent release of their self-titled debut CD 'Royal Southern Brotherhood'. Produced by legendary record producer Jim Gaines at Dockside Studio near Lafayette, Louisiana, this newly formed southern 'supergroup' consists of Cyril Neville (percussion & vocals), Devon Allman (guitar & vocals), Mike Zito (guitar & vocals), Charlie Wooton (bass) & Yonrico Scott (drums).

Royal Southern Brotherhood brings together the Allman/Neville dynasties with blues award winner Mike Zito and are billed as the 'Soul of the South' playing amplified soul for the new generation. Right from the outset they are headed for the 'New Horizon' on a driving drumbeat fuelled with incendiary guitar duels and soulful vocals, before a sea of percussion introduces the Santana influenced 'Fired Up!' that really does get the party into full swing. Next come two songs inspired by the great Mississippi river itself, Devon Allman's melancholy 'Left My Heart In Memphis' and the funky Zito/Neville ballad 'Moonlight Over The Mississippi'. All the tracks here are originals except for an interesting reggae remake of The Grateful Dead's 'Fire On The Mountain' which precedes another Zito/Neville song 'Ways About You' that builds throughout hitting all the right notes. 'Gotta Keep Rockin'' witnesses the band back in full flow with Allman unleashed on lead vocals and guitar followed by some more great singing on his 'Nowhere To Hide'. Echoes of another great southern band Lynyrd Skynyrd can be heard on 'Hurts My Heart', a Mike Zito song about the rich/poor divide prior to Cyril Neville singing about his beloved New Orleans on the sassy 'Sweet Jelly Donut'.

Having been fortunate enough to see the three main protagonists (Devon Allman, Cyril Neville and Mike Zito) in their own bands I was eager to see how the three melded together as a group. So often these "supergroups" are nothing more than the vehicle for one man's ego but happily I can report that "Royal Southern Brotherhood" are so much more than that. From the first song to the last this album is an absolute delight - rocky, funky and bluesy by turns (and often in the same song) this is an album to bring the steamy clubs and swamps of Louisiana to your doors !! The album and the band deserve to be a huge success and, hopefully, this will happen for them.
I hope that they come over to the UK as I am sure that they will be even better live. I can see them being firm favourites for many years to come on the blues festival circuit in the USA

If this band had been around in the heyday of southern rock they would've taken the world by storm. Not surprisingly they bear comparison with bands such as the Allman Brothers and the Meters - unsurprising given that they boast both an Allman (Devon, son of Gregg Allman) and a Neville (Cyril, a member of both the Meters and the Neville Brothers Band) in their line-up. But they have a strong identity of their own and bring a real modern feel to their southern blend of blues, funk and boogie. I particularly enjoyed the virtuoso slide work of guitar player Mike Zito, a really exciting musician.

This is an excellent first album with a number of stand-out tracks, particularly "Fire on the Mountain" and the grinding funk of "Sweet Jelly Doughnut". And this is not just a studio band - I had the good fortune to catch them on their recent visit to London and they're a superb live outfit. If you like your rock laced with the heat of the south, along with a healthy helping of Louisiana soul then you'll love this band.
