In the overall scheme of things I would say that this was a romantic fairy tale and while I found that much of the book was entertaining, on occasion I found some aspects seemed to distract me and because of that I lost pace with the storyline and for me that was more than a little irksome.
The author layered the story with a strong sub plotline that travelled in parallel with the romance that was developing between Colin and Della and while that romance was sweet I found the situation surrounding the assassination and aftermath, sort of muddied the waters and that was a shame.
Colin was in exile in the United States, but he is doing everything he can to try and endeavour to overturn the events that surrounded him fleeing his homeland. Della works for Colin as a caretaker on his estate, it is a job that she loves, caring for him and the two boys.
From the employer/employee relationship it was only a matter of time before one of them started to develop feelings for the other but could and would they be able to take what might happen any further and if they did could they find their own fairy tale ending or will his countries demands and his solution put paid to any real romance completely!
As crazy as the plan was, no-one knew him better than Della so it was obvious that she was going to accept his proposition, but would it bring out the best in them both or would the powers that be see right through their plan?
Their connection was a long time evolving and I wanted the prince and the pauper scenario to be the main focus of the story and to ensure that all things romantic were given their time in the spotlight, I just felt that the angst of other circumstances outweighed that on occasion and that was disconcerting.
I thought the story had legs to go a little further and that as a reader I was still searching for more information. I would have liked the author to take them a little further, give them a little more.
Colin and he's family, are Exiled from the British Isle, due to their parents murder.
They escape to the States to start a new life. Leaving their Royal Heritage behind.
Colin has a lot to deal with including protecting he's 2 sisters Charlotte and Imogen and he's twin brother's who are very young.
Imogen is the rightful Queen and it's Colin's duty to protect her from the outside world and their identity a secret.
Beaumont is the Royal head of security who agreed to be Exiled in order to protect the family.
Quickly Colin meets Della via an altercation regarding the tenancy of the caretakers home in which she lives in with Tressie.
They become fast, firm friends and Della remains very loyal to Colin and he's siblings.
The first chapter is a little hazy as it gives nothing away as to why the Sinclairs have been Exiled. I found it a little confusing as there wasn't a clear introduction to who the characters were.
However it didn't stop me from wanting to know more.
The book forwards on 10years and Della is still a huge part of the family.
In fact you can see subtle hints there is chemistry between Colin and Della.
Colin still has contact with the government and they call on Colin to attend a meeting.
The gist of the meeting is that in order to return from exile and rule the British Isle Imogen has to step down as the rightful Queen and Colin has to marry someone of the government's choice and become King.
Colin has no interest in becoming King, so the family come up with a plan to stop this from happening.
I won't go any further as I really don't wish to give any more away and spoil the mystery.
I loved how Marquita kept the reader guessing. She allowed you to think you knew what was going to happen but then Bang! another secret unveiled.
I fell in love with Colin and Della and was eager for them to fall in love. I really loved how Marquita kept an air of suspense and mystery between them. Building up the tension between them.
Royal Scandal is a charming book about Family, Loyalty, Trust, Friendship, Love, Heartache.
There really is something for everyone inside, a must read for all romantics who love a little mystery.
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review via NetGalley.
Royal Scandal started off quite slow and there were definitely moments I felt like giving up but I'm glad I persevered because it got better.
I found Colin and Della intriguing in the beginning but hiding their feelings from each other got tiring. However, when these two finally meet halfway, fireworks explode. I enjoyed their flirting/bantering and I liked it when Colin came out of his shell and told her exactly what he wanted to do to her. I was surprised at Colin's need to be dominant in the bedroom - didn't see that coming.
This was an enjoyable read with a good plot full of lies & secrecy and a friendship that blossoms into a love.
