I was completely out of my comfort zone reading Rowena's Key. I love a good romance, but this was total escapism, completely other-worldly and different to anything else I have read. I've read some mild fantasy before (think along the lines of Narnia and Harry Potter), but this was different- passion and longing wrapped up in the surprise combination of a bygone era and the cynical modern-day. I loved being able to immerse myself in something entirely fictional, with no echoes of news stories or other books I have read. I suppose this is one of the real strengths of the fantasy genre!
The characters were amusing (particularly Rowena's marvellous friend Ollie) and reeled me in from the start, and I would love to find out more about Ollie and his theatrical lifestyle. I found myself chuckling at the language Caedmon used throughout and Rowena's responses to it, and the book has a lot of dry humour which kept me entertained.
It did take me a while to adapt to reading a book so different to my usual reading material, but I found myself swept away by Rowena's Key. If you haven't read fantasy romance before, give it a whirl-you might be surprised.
Rowena works in the antiques industry and finds herself making a crazy purchase of an antique amoire, wherein she finds a mysterious key with her initials on it. Upon waking one night, she discovers the armoire open and through the mirror she is met by a man called Caedmon from another realm. But it i can't be real, it must be all a hoax, but Prince Caedmon is too convincing to be an actor, and she discovers that she must give him the key for him to save his kingdom. She slowly starts finding herself to be feeling more for him and she surely cannot deny him anything...
I was not so sure of this to start off with and I couldn't really gel with the main character, but once Rowena starts to believe that the mirror and Prince Caedmon are real, I began racing through the story to discover what would happen. It was like she had a complete character change and she came alive in the story and the feelings that start to ignite between her and Caedom felt so undeniably real! I desperately wanted Rowena and Caedmon to be together and for one of them to pass through the mirror so that they could be united.
I loved the mystery surrounding the key and the thought of a different realm being through the mirror. I love fantasy novels as I believe they are the best form of total escape in novels and this one completely took me away.
And oh my, what a fantastic cliffhanger! Cannot, cannot wait for the next in the series! I will definitely be reading.
Rowena's Key is the first novella of the Golden Key Chronicles. I really liked this book. Rowena is a wonderful person and I enjoyed reading about her. AJ Nuest's writing is beautiful. She delivers one perfect sentence after another which makes this story really good. She's made Caedmon come to life so well. There's a lot of tension between Rowena and her prince and some scenes are really hot. The great prose in combination with an original story and a little bit of magic makes this a wonderful read.
Rowena an antique dealer goes against her professional instincts and buys an antiquated armoire from England because of its tenuous connection with her past. When it reveals its secrets she comes face to face with Caedmon a sexy prince who is hot enough to star in every woman's fantasy. Caedmon's language is ancient and strange with an urban edge.
The armoire comes complete with a golden key that makes Rowena, who Caedmon believes to be a powerful witch, key to the future of the fantasy kingdom.
With a great supporting cast of real and fantasy characters Rowena's key is entertaining escapism for an hour or two.
You also get a taste of the next adventure in the series Candra's Freedom.
