Open the door came out in 1981 and still features the unique sound that is PentangleWith the line-up of Bert Jansch, Jaqui McShee, Teery Cox, Nigel Portman Smith and Mike Piggott the music reminds the listener of the hey days from the 60's. A mixture of folk/blues and even at times melodic rock give Pentangle a sound all their own.

Superb! 20 Feb 2011 By Music lover - Published on Amazon.com Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase Ok, for the hardcore folkie, you probably won't like this one because of the drums or some such, but the minute I heard this album some years ago when it came out, I immediately took to it. Previous to that I had only listened to their earlier albums Jacqui McShee's voice is in fine form here as is Bert Jansch's guitar and voice, if one likes his voice. I do. Very straight forward unashamed vocals though he isn't a virtuoso in the vocal area. Try this. You just may like it and be pleasantly surprised. Or you may not. Each to his/her own! --Amazon

The melody and beat Pentangle offers sweeps you into countryside festivals and abord drifting trains. I personally found peace, whimsy and strength through each titled song. --Amazon

Amazon.com: 4.0 out of 5 stars 4 reviews 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful 5.0 out of 5 stars the best of the later pentangle 29 Nov 2009 By marcabru - Published on Amazon.com Format:Audio CD This gem was the best effort by the re-united Pentangle or at least 3 of the original 5 members. The songs are varied in mood and range from the tart Play the Game to moodier efforts such as Suil Agrar and She Moved Though the Fair to straight ahead songs from Bert Jansch. Some of this groups later albums have a few good songs but this one is good from start to finish. --Amazon

I'm very glad to see this and "Open the Door" reissued. After not hearing in a few years, I have to say I'm enjoying this record much more than I did at first. Of course, this group doesn't quite have the magic of the group with Thompson and Renbourn. There's much more pop aspect, even akin to Spanky and Our Gang a bit, and "Let Me Be" has almost has a rock vibe. While the arrangements aren't as inventive or singular as the original group, and involve more keyboards, they're still crisp and interesting, and Jacqui's singing especially is very good. Bert Jansch's "Saturday Movie" is a charmer-- maybe overlooked for him, and the trad. songs done well, plus two pretty good songs by Terry Cox, if Terry's playing isn't for me quite as compelling as on the earlier albums. Overall, I think a charming, interesting album on its own terms.

After the reformation of Pentangle and the album open the door the second album In the Round came out in 1986.
This fine album offers much the same sort of great sound as the previous album. There are some great tracks on this folk rock album.
Nigel Portman Smith came into the group to replace original bassist Danny Thompson. But the album is still good and Portman Smith brings much to the Pentangle sound. He is multi instrumental and he helps to give Pentangle a wider sound.
He uses electric piano on Chase that Devil Away, track seven and it gives it a fabulous jazz sound.

Meanwhile Mike Piggott offers up a great strong rock feel with electric guitar to the whole album.
Bert Jansch is on top form and gives great guitar playing as usual as well as banjo on Play the game.
Jacqui McShee offers the folk flavour in her beautiful vocal style.

Bert’s song Open Sea is splendid and the traditional pieces She moved through the fair and Suil Agrar get wonderful arrangements here.

The new Pentangle doesn’t have the same spark that the original line up did but this album is a fine album and the re formed Pentangle prove that they can still offer great music without Renbourn or Thompson.

This is a good second album from the re formed group and deserves a place in a Pentangle collection.

Standard pop-style drumming on a conventional kit and unimaginative electric bass don't capture the flavour of 'true' Pentangle whose blend of unconventional playing was its real strength. This is an interesting curiosity but won't satisfy those expecting the vocal and instrumental talents of the original band.
