About the Author

A.J. Stewart wrote marketing copy for Fortune 500 companies and tech start-ups for 20 years, until his head nearly exploded from all the stories bursting to get out. Stiff Arm Steal was his fifth novel, but the first to make it into print. He has lived and worked in Australia, Japan, UK, Norway, and South Africa, as well as San Francisco, Connecticut and of course Florida. He currently resides in Los Angeles with his two favorite people, his wife and son. AJ is working on a screenplay that he never plans to produce, but it gives him something to talk about at parties in LA.

If you haven't read Miami Jones yet you have missed out. This is a great comic crime novel in the style of Elmore Leonard or Carl Hiassen. A.J Stewart has really mastered the character development and dialogue. I love all the books in the series. This is a worthy addition. Go back and read them all!

I received an advance readers copy of this book and it is as good as the others! The characters are well rounded and it's an enjoyable read if you like this genre. Well worth checking out the others in this series!

Loved this book. I received a free copy but that didn't mean the story was cheap too! It was up to the usual standard and certainly didn't disappoint. I can't want for the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and believable 2 Aug. 2016
By Jeff - Published on Amazon.com

I hate to give Deep Rough 4 stars when so many people have given it 5, but I reserve 5 stars for epic books like Lonesome Dove. I've really enjoyed everything I've read by Elmore Leonard (similar writing style to A.J. Stewart), but I wouldn't give any of his books 5 stars either. So, I really enjoyed Deep Rough and would recommend it to any of my friends who are also avid readers.
There are a few things I like about Stewart's books. The characters who we want to like are really likable and believable; the characters we aren't supposed to like are not caricatures of bad guys; and the stories and dialogue are believable and entertaining. Like probably most avid readers, I picture the action in my head as I'm reading it. A.J. makes it very easy to do that because his descriptions of people, places, and events are vivid, but not overblown. He also doesn't make mistakes that would distract me. As a former baseball player (one year college only), and avid golfer, I'm familiar with most of the background material to A.J.'s stories. He has not made a single technical mistake that I've noticed in any of his books. It's a minor point, but it does distract me when it happens. Even his description in this book about the difficulty of hitting a driver off the fairway, and the risk/reward of such a shot, is perfect. The main character seems to be modeled after a very likeable Irish golfer who I could imagine making the same decisions and speaking the dialogue as the main golfing character in Deep Rough.
If you like golf, like mysteries, or don't care for either but want to be entertained for a few hours, buy Deep Rough.
5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Miami Jones Mystery. 14 Aug. 2016

I love Miami Jones. I have read all of AJ Stewart's Miami Jones books.
Miami has such a tongue in cheek sense of humor that I find myself laughing out loud as I read the books.
This one starts of with Miami and his companion Danielle( who is a police officer) attending a wedding that goes terribly wrong. Right off you are drawn into the book. Enough don't want to spoil what happens.
The wedding is at a Golf club so you will learn a little about Golf. Miami really don't play much but he does get a chance to caddie.
I live in South Florida so I really enjoy picturing all the landmarks as they come up in the book.
Miami and Daniel live together so the is some nice romance going on.
I love the ending and I am sure you will too.
Enjoy !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I've loved Miami from the first pages of the first book 22 July 2016
By Barbara - Published on Amazon.com

I've loved Miami from the first pages of the first book. That's not to say the other characters fall short because I wish I knew a few of them in real life. We all need and should by our 40's have a friend like Ron who knows what kind of car we should drive. Are you a Porsche or a Cadillac? We all deserve a relationship where our work is understood and appreciated like Danielle. I'd love to have a Sally to be my white board who throws light on what I already know but don't always focus on. A Lizzy to do our research and pray for us when we push the limits. These characters reflect our lives and hopefully what we have but don't always recognize in the people we surround ourselves with. You'll love them like you love the people they represent in your own life.

Not a huge golf fan but I learned a few things. The suspense and mystery ever present surrounding Miami didn't fail in this book. Always pleased to have baseball thrown in the mix! Alligators not so much but just like the facts on grass you've been more educated while entertained.

I'm patiently waiting for the next book. Wedding bells? How's the Caddy drive? Why is Miami the front man of Lenny's business and not Ron? A.J. Stewart continues to leave me in suspense.

By Weston Yonge - Published on Amazon.com

The cleverness of previous novels in this series segued into self-indulgent cuteness, reflecting less effort or perhaps just a an exhaustion of the author's repertoire of truly clever dialogue. The character of Miami Jones had a nice balance of humility and confidence which in this story became a caricature of the previous versions. This lack of believability extended to the portrayal of Danielle, who is too perfect, beautiful, and powerful. Admittedly this is a formula that has worked well for others (Parker, McDonald,...) but didn't hit the mark in this case. On the other hand, I'll probably give the next novel a chance to redeem the series should there be a next one because those same characters have been endearing.
