Product description

Product Description

Welcome to the spiritual rhythms of voodoo, brought by slaves from the religion's West African birthplace to its incarnations in Haiti (Voudou), Cuba (Santería), Brazil (Candomble), Trinidad, and New Orleans. Grupo Vocal Desandann, Lord Nelson, Gangbé Brass Band, Maria Bethania and Dr John stand side-by-side in this unique take on voodoo's riveting musical history.

Bonus CD: Erol Josué - 'Régléman'

Haitian singer Erol Josué is a practicing Vodou priest. His music explores the traditional rhythms that connect to the religion's rich history with a contemporary twist.

A very good start if you are interested in santeria, candomblé and the haitian and caribbean tradition and syncretism in this region.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love the cover 14 Feb. 2017
By Les - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
After reading the previous review, I feel I must write something a little more positive. Firstly, I love the cover! I love the music therein also. Some of it is very atmospheric. It's obviously a little tongue-in-cheek.In the notes inside, they say that it's more an album of music from countries where Voodoo is practised. Most of the album is extremely good. I particularly like the Brazilian tracks. I love the last track, Craig Kleins version of "Marie Laveau". I like it, it's something different. Not everyones cup of tea, perhaps.
2.0 out of 5 stars Rough Guide has no idea what voodoo is! Very Disapointed! 14 Nov. 2016
By Charlene - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
If you want to hear real Voodoo Music, this is not it! Very disappointed! The title is very misleading. Rough Guide has no idea what voodoo is.
