This compilation lives up to the usual high standards of the rough guide series - giving you a nice little overview of the various strands of a particular musical style.
So if Reggae to you is just Bob Marley and UB40 this would be a good place to start finding out more.
Personally I thoroughly enjoyed about a quarter of the tracks. The rest, although not to my taste, were interesting from a "find your way around Reggae" point of view.
I have to say however that the Maytals track has had me frugging like a mad loon since I got it - and is worth the entrance money on its own. A joyous little groove.
The rough guide - does exactly what it says on the tin.

HASH(0x91c0fd7c) out of 5 stars Good introduction to raggae outside of the Bob Marley-zone 11 Dec. 2009

It's meant to be an audio parallel to the excellent Rough Guide to Reggae music which covers the history of Jamaican popular music out of the dancehalls and sound systems and into regular rotation in American frat houses. The reggae tradition is more nuanced and complex than the radio play in the States though and this disk makes for a good introduction to that. (Though, as always with these sorts of CDs, there are bands missing from it for reasons of space and/or licensing. You have to accept that reality when it comes to music samplers.) Pair it up with the book for your best experience.
