The Rosicrucian Enlightenment Revisited Paperback – 1 Jan. 1999

4.3 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

It's nearly 30 years since historian Dame Frances Yates published her groundbreaking study The Rosicrucian Enlightement, and so brought academic rigour back to a subject which had for too long been almost the sole province of occultists who often confused fact and fancy. Yates placed the three main Rosicrucian manifestos, which first appeared in 1614-1616, in the context of their time and place--the marriage of Elizabeth, dauthter of James VI & I, to Fredrick, Elector Palatine, head of the German Protestant princes--and identified many of the key players in 17th-century hermetic thought. The Rosicrucian Enlightenment Revisited is a collection of papers given in Yates's honour at two conferences in the Czech Republic in 1995 and 1997, at which some of today's leading writers and academics in this field presented their latest research findings.

It's nearly 30 years since historian Dame Frances Yates published her groundbreaking study The Rosicrucian Enlightement, and so brought academic rigour back to a subject which had for too long been almost the sole province of occultists who often confused fact and fancy. The Rosicrucian Enlightenment Revisited is a collection of papers given in Yates's honour at two conferences in the Czech Republic in 1995 and 1997, at which some of today's leading writers and academics in this field presented their latest research findings.

For readers new to the subject and not already conversant with Rosicrucian history, editor Ralph White's Introduction and Christopher McIntosh's very straightforward chapter "The Rosicrucian Legacy" will prove the most accessible. But for anyone with an interest (historical or spiritual) in the hermetic philosophers, alchemy or other religion or literature--there is some fascinating material in this collection. Paul Bembridge's paper on the likelihood of the metaphysical poet Andrew Marvell being a Rosicrucian is probably the most controversial. The book also, very usefully, includes the full text of the first two Rosicrucian manifestos, the Fama Fraternitas and the Confessio Fraternitas. --David V Barrett

Hi. I'm John Matthews. I've written nearly 200 books over the last 50 years or so. Books about many things. Pirates, King Arthur and the Grail Quest, Faeries, Robin Hood,Spring-Heeled Jack, and many more. I love folklore, history and film and I recently began writing for movies and TV, creating documentaries, TV scripts and motion pictures. I have also created 13 divinatory systems, tarots etc and have worked with some of the finest artists in the world, including Brian Froud, Charles Vess, Will Worthington, Andre Aste, Charles Newington, Yvonne Gilbert and Wil Kinghan. I have also written many books with my partner Caitlin Matthews, with whom I sometimes think I share a brain, and who knows what I'm thinking before I think it. I was going to put a picture of my cat Willow here, but i guess you might rather see me. I recently began to write books for younger readers, including graphic novels and the fabulous StoryWorld series. This year (2018) set the publication of the first in a series of long planned novels about the young King Arthur and his education by Merlin. Its called The Sword of Ice and Fire, the first of a quartet with the overall title Red Dragon Rising. Even after so many books I still felt a real thrill when the author's copies arrived on my desk. Writing so many books has always been hard work and it continues to be so, but I love the act of creation and cannot imagine ever doing anything else. I'm greatful to all the countless people who have read my books, especially those who made my book on Pirates a New York Times best seller in 2006. There are many more books to come, so I hope you'll keep reading, and keep pestering your booksellers to stock them!

Yates thorough research teases out the issues involved in the first historical appearance of the Rosicrucian manifestos and the politics of the movement at a crucial period in European history. Well worth a read for the insights it gives to the events in the world today, as well as those of the 16th and 17th centuries.

I am enjoying this purchase it is very clearly written. It gives you a clear view of the movement and its background. I would rate it highly. Unlike some books in this arena it is a good read. I enjoy anything written by the writers of this book. It was like reading Parabola magazine...

Le condizioni del libro sono risultate pessime: copertina sgualcita; pagine accartocciate; pagine sottolineate malamente; innumerevoli orecchie alle pagine. è veramente scandaloso vendere 8a quel prezzo) un libro di questo tipo
