Product Description

Long before Mod reached the masses, circa 1964, there existed 'Modernists', a central London cult that pre-empted the dress sense in constant flux. Everything had to be just so: back vents precisely seven inches once week, exactly five the next. At Soho's open-all-night Flamingo one Saturday, you had to be electric-blue Italian. Go back the following Thursday, and it'd be Parisian. It was these same early harbingers of sartorial elegance who drew-up the blueprint for the sonic delights that continue to dominate mod-culture half a decade after it emerged. The charts - then known as 'the hit parade' - was snobbishly dismissed in favour of modern jazz, early soul cuts, brutish R'n'B, and even the odd 'girl-group', the earliest examples of which (at least under any hip leaning of the term) were just emerging when the pioneers of this new-movement were still on target practice. This compilation - augmented with extensive sleevenotes - brings together an impressive 54 tracks that illustrate perfectly what got the younger siblings of the first rock & roll generation onto the dance floors. With classics of the genre rubbing shoulders with obscure gems and old school ties co-existing with the future sounds of London, a finer collection of the roots of the most enduring of all British youth cults can barely be envisaged.

This is a great insight into what influenced early mod music, that's not to say everything on here is mod it isn't but it is great. i am a huge fan of the who, small faces, kinks, and all the other mod bands that came with them but they are the second maybe even third wave of mod music, long before those great groups earlier mods were listening to the blues, jazz, soul, and ska, everything that makes up this cd, this is what made them want to be in a band, great music.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Roots of Mod. 8 Feb. 2014
By Seth W. Schenck - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This anthology is properly named--it is made up of various songs that were associated with the "Mod" subculture, of the late 50's/early 1960s....The songs sound as if you're playing them on a Dansette, and it's 1964....which might not be everyone's cuppa, but regardless of your feelings, the track listing is still a stonker, and a wonderful idea, which documents how the first generation of post WWII Britons looked abroad for music to appropriate to the soundtrack of their lives. This soundtrack, also included British Beat Music....On this well thought out compilation, you get: R&B, Modern Jazz, Ska, Soul, French Pop, and home grown artists from the UK. One to pick up if you'd like to hear some boss sounds, which were near and dear, to the hearts of many a British youth, before the next big thing came along, with the Skinheads, and their Reggae, and Soul music....or one to get, to simply listen to good music from half a century ago....sans a few tunes, here and there....

3.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing anthology, inferior sound 27 Feb. 2012
By Comment Man - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This anthology is mis-named--it is simply various songs the anthologist associates with the "Mod" faddism of the early 1960s, a trend more or less forgotten in America, which apparently involved British youth who dressed sharply, listened to jazz, drove scooters and dated attractive young women who had funny ideas about dancing. This unpromising premise for an anthology is actually a wildly unpredictable grouping of songs, many of which are relatively rare and pretty cool.

Unfortunately, the mastering of the CD is poor. The tracks actually sound like MP3s I download from Amazon and then use my computer to burn to a CD. The sound quality is, in my opinion, not acceptable for a commercial CD, and I am so disappointed I will probably avoid Chrome CDs in the future as a consequence.

If the sound quality of the CD was better, the oddball nature of this anthology, and the excitement of discovering new songs would have caused me to rate it 4 or even 5 stars.
