Room On The Broom is as fabulous a picture book as you'd expect from the team that brought you The Gruffalo. It hits all the right notes, with its strong sense of rhyme, a familiar element of repetition, interesting characters, and a nice plot twist at the end. Axel Scheffler's illustrations are as glorious as ever. There's nothing to knock. (The Book Bag)
Written in rhyme in true Julia Donaldson style, this is yet another story that will engage young children. (Toppsta)

We already have a normal paperback version of Room on the Broom and it is a favourite in our household. When I read this new style book out loud to my children, I initially found the sound effects kind of got in the way of the rhythm of how I usually read it. Now I am more used to it, I think it has breathed new life into the story. I also think this style of book may encourage new readers to follow the words on the page more as you are reading them (even if you are following them with your finger at first) as they like to see when the next button needs to be pressed.
My son doesn't mind because he only really wants to look at the pictures and point, but I wish we'd known before we bought it, because it really isn't as good as the original.
Firstly; I LOVE story book Witches! I had a thing about Witches when I was a child, and loved reading about them and drawing them also, and thought I might start again in my spare time by copying some of these - they're so good to use. But many modern Witches in books look just that - `modern', but some (as in this book) still look like a traditionally old-fashioned looking story-book Witch which I think is important in this modern world of `forever changing things that don't need changing'.
The second reason was I'd missed out on this on two occasions from the Amazon Vine Programme where I could have had it to Review for free. (I am always losing out to those `something for nothing' lovers who sit by their computer and won't budge until the Vine email has arrived and they've nabbed all the best stuff for nothing...) I also love Reviewing children's books too.
Well; in my opinion, kids are going to just LOVE this book! (I did! LOL) Well; it's a tremendously good and interesting story written in rhyme - which is both different and `quaint', and the pictures are just SO colourful and vibrant! Some of the pictures of the Witch's expressions (like when she's falling off the broom) are really quite hilarious!
There are ten interactive sounds on the side. Now these were a little disappointing I thought... Okay; they `are' sounds, but some are not probably what some kids may be expecting. The Witch's laugh is by far the best here, and most atmospheric, and I guess they are going to enjoy that one the most - but the others are a bit `naff'... Like the cat one for instance; you'd at least be expecting a `meow' or perhaps even a screech - but what you get is like a little `snoring sound' for a `purr'... Also as someone else has said; the one where they all fall in the bog is more of a `plop' - I really couldn't believe that one... Not very imaginative at all... The buttons don't always respond first time by the way - not even with a good strong adult `press', and so some kids might get a bit irritated with these too.
Finally; the pages are NOT board - or even card (as someone has claimed in their Review) but ordinary paper. (which is quite thin too) The problem being I think; little kids are easily going to rip them - the pages are HUGE, and because they are sort of `in a well' (because of the raised soundboard next to them) they are VERY difficult to get a hold of and turn, and so expect a few disasters and some tears! Also; the sheer size of the book; it is VERY big and quite cumbersome, and I should imagine too that some little ones will have problems holding/carrying this.
Apart from these niggles though, it has to be said that the story (which I guess is the main thing here) and illustrations could not be surpassed, and so this will be well worth the money.
I didn't really want to, but I've just knocked one star off for poor implementation. There are so many great ideas out there these days, but they always seem to fall short on one issue or another - and they always seem so obvious to me... The ideas just need a little more thinking out sometimes.
She adores the pictures, the rhymes are easy for her to remember, and she invariably ends up gleefully finishing the lines with me, and predicting the next page. She also points to the relevant illustration at the same time, telling me what will happen next ("... the bird saw it fall ...."; "... the frog will find it for her ...."; "... the dragon! the dragon is following her!")
It's a good length for a bedtime read - 10-15 minutes, depending on the amount of interaction.
Finally, it's a nice little feel-good story, with a positive message of kindness and co-operation; and all characters happy at the end (apart from that mean old dragon, of course).
I bought the "board" version of the book, and I'm glad I did, because it has been manhandled, dropped, sat upon, and (on 2 occasions) wedged in the back of the sofa. I can't honestly say that it's 'as good as new', but it is still very much fit for purpose, in one piece, with all pages intact and untorn.
