Room On The Broom is as fabulous a picture book as you'd expect from the team that brought you The Gruffalo. It hits all the right notes, with its strong sense of rhyme, a familiar element of repetition, interesting characters, and a nice plot twist at the end. Axel Scheffler's illustrations are as glorious as ever. There's nothing to knock. (The Book Bag)
Written in rhyme in true Julia Donaldson style, this is yet another story that will engage young children. (Toppsta)

She adores the pictures, the rhymes are easy for her to remember, and she invariably ends up gleefully finishing the lines with me, and predicting the next page. She also points to the relevant illustration at the same time, telling me what will happen next ("... the bird saw it fall ...."; "... the frog will find it for her ...."; "... the dragon! the dragon is following her!")
It's a good length for a bedtime read - 10-15 minutes, depending on the amount of interaction.
Finally, it's a nice little feel-good story, with a positive message of kindness and co-operation; and all characters happy at the end (apart from that mean old dragon, of course).
I bought the "board" version of the book, and I'm glad I did, because it has been manhandled, dropped, sat upon, and (on 2 occasions) wedged in the back of the sofa. I can't honestly say that it's 'as good as new', but it is still very much fit for purpose, in one piece, with all pages intact and untorn.
Like most Julia Donaldson books, it has a good use of repetition which appeals to young children (my daughter has just turned two) and the book flows really well. The length is perfect for a bedtime story and the illustrations capture my daughter’s attention.
Despite being about a witch, it is not a scary book, although I do like to theme our reading around the seasons and think this would be a good choice for Halloween. I would recommend, it’s yet another brilliant book from Julia Donaldson.
Children will love the fabulous story of `Room On The Broom' featuring the benevolent Witch and several other characters who join her as passengers on her long and windy journey flying through the sky! The Sound Book is great (see my Review for that) but this is wonderful too! Josie Lawrence does a tremendous job as the Reader, but more importantly; the sounds accompanying the story are just the right volume - unlike the awful disaster of `Winnie The Witch' CD Set. (see my Review for those)
On first listening, I did feel that the Witch's laugh should really have been more of a `cackle' than it is, but on subsequent plays, I got to like it, and one finds that this is more acceptable, as it's a really funny story. I also found the sound of the Witch searching for the objects she drops in flight quite hilarious! One can almost see the Witch scrambling on her hands and knees to find her lost ribbon, wand, etc. among the grass!
As an added bonus, the story is followed by another version put to music which is very catchy and rather `addictive' in its melody which will probably have you humming it for hours afterwards...
All in all a great product that children and adults alike will love!
