I should have known that the creator of the incredible Quentin Black could do no less than create this masterpiece that is the new Rook. What can I say about Rook the first story in Bridge and Sword awakening? I was blown away by its prophetic glimpse of an alternative future. Unlike with Black, I could understand straight away where the author saw this new future heading. She takes a look at what is possible now, adds some psychic gifts then enhances them until they evolve into something so much more powerful and limitless. It becomes a very plausible future that can be either light or dark depending on the eventual outcome that only she, the creator the virtual God can determine. That is so fascinating and I just love how this first part has drawn us in so spectacularly. sheer genius JCA you are amazing!

If you like your books with complex world building, and detailed, intricate mythology and history, with wonderfully deep character development then this book might just be for you!

Now obviously, I don't want to give anything away, but parts of the relationship story between Allie and Revik hurt my heart. The author seems to do that to me with regularity, which is a testament to the strength of her writing. But don't get misunderstand, the relationship within these pages has a very different feel to the Quentin Black stories. There is a sense of yearning which just drew me in.

This is not a book which is a superficial read. This is the kind of book that you have to focus on - that's really not a chore though when the writing and the pacing is as good as this. The way the web weaves together is really very clever.

I look forward to reading more in the series.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

Rook. Allie's War, Book One. JC Andrijeski

Review from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews.
** Just noticed that JCA says this has been heavily re-edited, so maybe the issues I had on first reading of it are sorted. Its on KU, so I've just downloaded it and will see if there's anything I need to add to this review. **
Since beginning this series it’s become one of my favourites and I’ve recently just finished rereading it. From this first review I understand the world and the characters so much better now, so rather than redo my review I’ve amended it and bracketed the new details.
I love fantasy/paranormal romance, and the premise of this book intrigued me. I'd read the sample and wanted to know more. I've mixed feelings though, I loved the sample but that’s the simplest part of the story, its get more and more complex and involved, with panic stricken journeys in this world and a parallel one, with people being more than they are, and sometimes more than one person.... When I could keep up with the story I really enjoyed it, but found I was skipping much of the book, as frankly I just didn't understand what it was about, and many of the scenes seemed to be long and drawn out. I suspect that's because JC is setting a complex novel in a world very different to what we are used to, and that’s a lot to ask of any first book in a series. I suspect, as I've found before, that further on in the series I’ll understand far more about the sections and story lines I’ve skipped. (I was right, after reading further books and the novellas I’ve been gripped by this series, and watching desperately for the next one out. Its great value too as even the novellas are longer than many so called full length reads, and the main books are all very long. great for quick readers such as myself.

I'm not usually a lover of this genre and this is the first book that I have read by this author but it literally blew me away. The storyline was believable and the characters strong and in depth. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for any future releases by this author.
