3.0 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable book concerning the Italian front '43-'44 14 April 2004
By Mike S. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
The author was a British officer in the Med during WW2 and tells the tale of Italy during late 1943 through 1944, primarily focusing on Rome, Anzio and Cassino. The author tells the story of the battle for Italy by telling the story of a variety of individuals and weaving them in amongst official records. The story is played out from an Irish priest in the countryside, an FJ NCO at Anzio, a German DRK nurse in Rome, etc.. this might not entice some people, but IMO, gives some interesting insight - I really enjoyed the book, but not for the official history but for the real history.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Poor Excuse for history 29 May 2003
By SJL - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
A disjointed and often innaccurate study, it draws heavily on Trevlyan's own experiences at Anzio.
While there are some interesting insights into small unit actions, the quality of the book is best reflected in the fact that he quotes a writer of pulp war fiction, Sven Hassel, as a historical source.
