Being 60 something I have sometimes have this problem with the current multiplicity of music genres; someone assured me that The Naked and Famous are a fine example of 'synth-pop' and then someone else said `Indie'. On hearing Passive Me, Aggressive You I settled for good, sharp, energetic music based on keyboards and guitars, and loved the album. And this album establishes them as a band with a future to remain fresh.
'In Rolling Waves' is certainly a The Naked and Famous album, there is that same signature clear energy. Vocals shared by Alisa Xayalith and Thom Powers' on individual tracks or working just as well on duos.
Here there are examples of a slower pace and a deeper texture. It would be unfair to say an edge has gone, more accurate to say it has been honed. With the opening track `A Stillness' you can sense the band has undergone a development, as I said slower, and in this track almost a tinge darker; `A Heart Like Ours' has echoes of the previous album with Alisa's vocals soaring about the waves of sound; then comes `Waltz' handled by Thom and a much more introspective gentle offering while `Rolling Waves' again harks back to the previous album.
And this is the tone of the album moving from one pace to another. It's a very satisfying mesh of the signature sound of the band with a confidence to move on into those other areas. The last track highlights this, `A Small Reunion' is a poignant ballad sung as a duo, strings brought in to good effect without swamping those foundations of the band's music.
I mentioned these tracks just an examples, the whole album is an uplifting joy to listen to.
Once again (bears repeating) very encouraging for their future

A sublime recording from a unique group. In Rolling Waves is an astonishing and beautiful piece of work from a band that exudes integrity, emotion and seek to craft technical brilliance. Layered and textured, each song takes the listener to another place, be it the stark and minimalistic terrains within The Stillness and Grow Old or the joyous and melancholic euphoria of I Kill Giants, this is an original, intelligent and interesting band. Golden Girl is so moving, haunting and dripping with atmospherics you just never want it to end. The title track is perfection, from the words to the piano that is so evocative of raindrops, of water falling into the sea. It is a soothing and hypnotic track that comes to life with the aid of some fantastic production values, there are pulsating electronics and whispering percussion embellishments that add depth and detail to a delicate but powerful song. The Stillness is like a moving machine, so many ideas and sounds all perfectly placed, electronic and acoustic sounds blend to create many different emotions and imagery, it all flows and builds until it simply disintegrates. Sections of the lyrics read like poetry and some of it is almost abstract, so the listener can imagine what they want from these fragments of unknown and strange stories. The Naked and Famous are such a great band that appear honest and real, a genuine rarity in these vacuous and graceless times.

It's the first album by the Naked and Famous that I've tried, and I enjoyed listening to it. I do however feel that they front-loaded it slightly, with all of the biggest and best sounding tracks packed into the first half of the album. A Stillness, Hearts Like Ours and Rolling Waves are the stand-out tracks for me.

A slight change of pace from Passive me, Aggressive you, but still a fantastic album, great electronic pop coupled with superbly crafted lyrics makes this a must have. Favourite song of the album - The Mess.

The Naked and Famous are a brilliant band and always bring about new sounds like no other band really. I loved their first album and continue to listen to all of the songs on that album. When I first listened to In Rolling Waves I wondered why they had toned it down a bit, but if you keep listening to the songs over and over the songs really get better and better and I think they have done a fantastic job in creating a new sound for their second album. Keep going. You guys are doing great, its really good to hear music that communicates and has meaning to it.
