A top-seller worldwide for nearly 10 years running, the MICRO CUBE is the most popular battery-powered amp of all time. The new MICRO CUBE GX retains the tiny size and huge sound of its legendary predecessor while adding many great additions and improvements, including i-CUBE LINK, increased output power, a chromatic tuner, and a MEMORY function for saving your favourite settings. The massive, high-gain EXTREME brings the total number of COSM amps to eight, while HEAVY OCTAVE has been added to the on-board effects section for thick, ultra-low tones. i-CUBE LINK opens many new opportunities for practice and recording, providing a built-in audio interface for working with music apps on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. With up to 25 hours of playing time using six NiMH AA-size batteries, you can enjoy uninterrupted fun while jamming at home, at the beach, on camping trips, at parties-wherever! Increased power output delivers even better performance than before, and a chromatic tuner is built in, eliminating the need to carry an external tuner when you play.

Externally, this is nicely put together, and is styled in a rugged flight-case "rock" way with its protected corners and edges, and metal grille, though it probably won't get thrown about much.
This has a nice selection of sounds from it, the first half of the amp models being strictly clean (Acoustic Sim, JC Clean and Black Panel) no matter how much you crank the gain up.
It gets more exciting as you get to Brit Combo (Vox AC30TB model) where altering the gain takes it from clean to crunchy to distorted. They get heavier as you continue around the dial : Classic Stack is "Marshall", R-Fier is "Mesa/Boogie" and Extreme is all on crazy. I can't compare them to the real things and nobody would expect them to be exact for a tiny amp (unless they are deranged), but they give an overall impression of that sort of thing.
Effects are relatively basic but work: chorus, phaser, flanger or tremolo, and (new for the upgrade) Heavy Octave which adds a dropped octave. On the other control you can choose from delay, (room) reverb or spring reverb. The delay lacks a feature that the Vox has. With the Vox you can tap in the delay time and use the dial to alter the repeat (from say, one repeat to repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat...) On this Roland you turn the dial to alter the delay time but the repeat appears to be fixed (at a fairly lengthy repeat that goes on a bit too long for me).
There is a Gain, Volume AND Master Volume, which seems a bit of overkill on this tiny amp. Perhaps it makes a difference when using with the aux input (for MP3 player) but for me the Volume doesn't do anything!
Their Unique Selling Point, which will be talked about on every other review or Roland advert you see, is the Apple i-Cube link allowing you to connect your iPhone (cable supplied) and use their free app to jam along to and possibly even record what you're doing. I don't have an iPhone so have no interest or opinion on this feature. No, they don't do an Android version as of now.
In summary, this will do the job it's intended for.
Aesthetically, it's not the prettiest of amps around - it doesn't have the retro charm or curves of the Vox Mini 3, but a look at the photos will make your own mind up.
Tonally it has the range but I did prefer the Vox as it seemed warmer and produced some nice rounded cleans.
Effects-wise, they are all ok but the Vox has a slight edge as it has more control over what you can do with them.
It has the iPhone connection, if that's your thing.
It has a proper tuner feature that detects the note (so you can tune every string!). Other amps like the Vox Mini 3 and Fender Mustang Mini just have an "E" tuner so you tune your E with it and then have to tune the other strings by ear.
If it sounds like I prefer the Vox Mini 3 over this, I probably would have, but it produced too much ambient noise so it went back (two lots) so the Cube is for me.
This seems to have been the favourite amp of its kind for several years and with good reason, especially with the new features.
2 I wanted an amp that is truly portable It is . I am running it on recharable batterys so no mains power is required.
3 I wanted an amp that had an aux I/P so I could practice with backing tracks from my Tablet. It comes with the I/P and a lead
4 I wanted an amp with earphone O/P socket for quiet playing. It has one.
5 I wanted an amp with a good range of affects. This unit has most of the great affects present with the Roland 80 amp output cube.
Can't recommend enough!
A amp for a bedroom or even to play outside it’s almost perfect ! The cream colour looks nice with my cream coloured fender strat.
I have looked at the similar models in Amazon and YouTube, and made the choice if this model.
It produce the sounds as expected, and can be very loud with volume in my house. So no worry about the sound quality and volume.
It has a bit of hiss noise, hence I give 4 stars. But this type of noise may be expected with electric guitar and amp.
